September MAV News
Maize South Middle School
Growing up in a small town, I had the good fortune to play sports and participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. Those are memories - and life lessons - that I carry with me to this day. As we begin our fall sports competitions this week, I hope our student-athletes experience the thrill of victory more than the agony of defeat. However, I also hope they persevere through the struggles that these same activities provide. Difficult times make us better in the long run - and victories all the sweeter!
During my time in sports, I played the quarterback position. Calling my teammates into the huddle allowed us to form a plan and execute it as a team. This simple act was paramount to our success. Sometimes the play worked and sometimes, well, let's just say we had to huddle up again. Our motto for this school year is #Huddle. We want to be on the same page - with teachers, with students, and with our Maverick families.
In order for our team to be successful, we must #Huddle. Our families are vital to the success of their children. Your partnership with us will foster an opportunity for all of our Mavericks to achieve their highest potential. Please contact us with any need you may have. We welcome all families to MSMS and look forward to engaging with you in a manner that helps your child reach the endzone this school year. See you in the #Huddle!
A few reminders:
- ELA and Math AimsWeb testing is taking place this week during our fall screener. We will share these scores with parents as soon as we have them. Testing benchmarks will take place again in the winter as well as the spring.
- The first 30 minutes of each day (Mav Time) are devoted to Social/Emotional Learning, Executive Functioning, and Maverick Connections. It is vital that your child arrives at school each day by 7:30 am.
- Student Council Elections for 7th graders will take place this week and next. All interested students must see Mr. Schultz in room D100 in order to run. Applications are due September 9th.
- In order for your child to be released to another adult, that person must be listed in Skyward under "Emergency Info."

Each morning, our students begin their day within their Mav Time classes. During this time, classes focus on a variety of topics depending on the day of the week. This class is crucial for our students to prepare them for their day, and we truly value this time with our Mav Time "families". Parents, you can support your student(s) in their organization, grade awareness, and social/emotional learning by asking about their Mav Time focus each week.
We are excited to welcome parents/guardians into our building to volunteer during Mav Time (7:00-8:00 a.m.) and lunch time (11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.). If you are interested in this fun opportunity, keep your eye out for more information to come later this month!
