The WAVA Wave
January 2017
A Message from our Principal...
Dear WAVA Families,
Welcome back to school and to 2017! I hope you were able to enjoy time doing some fun things. My family was able to spend some time snowboarding which is such a fun hobby for us. I hope that you are ready to get back into your daily routine after the restful break.
As we settle back into our routines, I want to stress the importance of attending all required Class Connect Sessions as well as completing the daily assigned lessons. This ensures that teachers and students are able to engage in meaningful interactions with the content that is being learned each week. I know that our teachers are excited to welcome you back to school!
In January we will have our Martin Luther King assemblies, please watch for the optional assembly to be added to your schedule. Please join us, we love seeing you during our assemblies! The end of the semester is also coming on January 27th, report cards will sent at the end of the month. It is hard to believe that we have almost completed ½ of the school year already!
Let’s make 2017 a great year!

COUNSELOR CONNECT
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cold and damp, we should be aware of how much time we spend indoors. This is especially true for students and learning coaches working in the online environment. It is easy to spend all the daylight hours in front of a computer, but we shouldn’t neglect our basic needs for sunlight, fresh air, and exercise. If you aren’t doing so already, schedule some time into your student’s day to have them get up and spend 30 minutes doing some kind of exercise, preferably outdoors: Go for a walk, play with a pet, go to a park, or practice your preferred sport. Hopefully you do this throughout the year, but it is extra important during the winter months.
For some people, “winter blues” or “winter blahs” can become a serious issue. If your student seems especially lethargic or moody, they may be dealing with some degree of Seasonal Affective Disorder. If you think that may be the case, consider scheduling an appointment to discuss the issue with a medical professional.
As always, if there is anything I can do to help support you and your student, please call or email me through the OLS.
