Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
October 16th-20th
What's Going On This Week
Ms. Harris' Science: This week we will have a quiz over Lessons 1 and 2 of Sound on Tuesday. We will then start Lesson 3 "Volume". The unit test over Lessons 1-3 will be Friday, October 27th. A study guide will be given by this Thursday. Students are encouraged to use the symbaloo page (see below) and the tech book, along with their IANs, to study for their unit test.
Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week will be finish up our last two explorers, Henry Hudson and Robert LaSalle. There will a test over the last four explorers (De Soto, Cabot, Hudson, and LaSalle) on Friday, October 20th. All extra credit is due by Wednesday, October 18th.
Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA: This week we are continuing our first Lucy Calkins unit, Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story, and diving deep into studying characters. We will continue learning how to think deeply about characters while reading our new novel, Tiger Rising. In writing, we are reviewing our Narrative/Realistic Fiction unit by starting Spooky Stories!!! We will be working on this until the week of Halloween. Spelling words were not given today, but will be given on Monday. We will be spending two weeks on these words. Spelling test will be Friday, October 27th. This week in math we will review translating expressions and learn about multiplicative comparisons. Quiz on Friday!
Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: This week we will wrap up our Kate DiCamillo novels and start a JGB folktale, "Shrewd Todie and Lyzer the Miser." Students will work with this story all week and on Friday will take an open book test on it. We will also continue drafting and revising our spooky stories. Their drafts are due on Tuesday. In math, we will work on multiplicative comparison problems. This is usually pretty tricky at first, so your child may come home confused. Have them practice using their homework and we will continue working on it in class until they feel more confident and successful. Our timed tests will be Tuesday and Friday for their multiplication facts.
