Classroom and Teacher Assignment
Not Coming Back?
Meet The Teacher....This Will Be A Change to Our Normal Back To School Night Procedures
Third graders and one parent/guardian will have a designated evening to come to South Elementary to find their classroom, meet their teacher, and add school supplies to their desks. To keep crowds to a minimum, half of our third-grade teachers(Mrs. McDugle, Mrs. Russell, and Mrs. Swartz) will have a designated time on August 10 and the other half (Miss Anderson, Miss Bartlett, Mrs. Grundlock and Mrs. Legan) will be on August 11. Invitations will be sent to parents with available times, which will either be from 5:30-6:00 or 6:00-6:30. Deposits may be made to your child's lunch account during your visit. Our cafeteria manager and a representative from Transportation will be available in the cafeteria to answer questions. A reminder that all visitors must wear a mask during their visit.
Fourth-grade teachers will be sharing a video with families in order to introduce themselves, and share class or grade level information. Videos will be sent by 4 p.m. on August 12. Teachers will also invite students to a “meet the teacher” virtual (Zoom) session with a small group of students (six to eight students) by 4 p.m. on August 12. Fourth-grade students may bring their school supplies to school over several days. Lunch money may be sent to school on the first day with your child or parents may make a payment via their parent portal.
On August 10 or 11 between 5:30-6:30, fourth-grade students new to the district and one parent/guardian may come to do a self-guided tour to become familiar with the building and locate their classroom or parents may sign up for a daytime appointment while the teacher is in the building on the 10th, 11th, or 12th. Teachers will reach out to new families with additional information. Deposits may be made to your child's lunch account during your visit. A reminder that all visitors must wear a mask during their visit.
Masks
First Day of School
Doors open- 7:25 a.m.
Tardy bell- 7:40 a.m.
Dismissal- 2:25. p.m.
Opening Day
To help with easing dismissal jitters, please make sure your child and their teacher know exactly where the child is to go after school. Students and teachers should know if they are to be car riders, bus riders, or walkers. Teachers will double-check in the morning, and again at the end of the day, to make sure everyone knows where they need to go.
Please note that parents will not be able to walk students into the school on the first day due to visitor restrictions. We will be following our normal procedures.
School Supplies
If you have purchased your own supplies, third graders may bring those on the evening of the your assigned open house. Fourth graders may bring them on day 1 or over several days if their bag becomes too bulky.
If any families are in need of school supply assistance, please contact southoffice@danville.k12.in.us and let us know of your needs. We are fortunate to have some very generous community members who have made donations.
The school supply list can be found on our webpage at www.danville.k12.in.us under parent and student resources.
Car Riders
At the end of the day, students will not be released to their car until the car is along the sidewalk and they must enter the PASSENGER side of the vehicle.
On the first day of school, we will send home a VISOR TAG to display each day in the pick-up line. Students will be lined up just inside our doors awaiting your arrival. As parents pull up, our staff will radio for students to come out. Please be sure the visor tag is visible. This is a new process at South Elementary. We ask for your patience in the first few days as we work to make it a quick and efficient process.
Destination Changes
For our bus riders, students will be limited to two possible bus destination addresses. Parents are asked to complete the Google form listed above prior to the start of school to help ensure we have the correct destination information for each day of the week.
Walkers or Bike Riders
Those walking home at the end of the day will be held until the buses leave the lot.
A bicycle rack is available outside door #14 for any bike riders.
Breakfast and Lunch
Beginning the first day of school, students may choose to get a grab and go breakfast from our cafeteria. The regular price for breakfast is $1.50 or $.30 reduced. Students will “check in” at their classrooms first, pick up breakfast from the cafeteria, and then take it back to the classroom to eat prior to the start of the day’s activities.
The regular cost of lunch for students is $2.85 or $.40 reduced. Students are allowed to buy “extras.” Please discuss with your child if they are allowed to purchase these extra items or not.
Due to current restrictions, no visitors will be allowed during lunch.
Attendance Matters
As the year progresses, if your child begins to struggle getting to school, please reach out to us. Our counselor, Kelsie McGee, is a great place to start. She can help with getting a healthy routine back on track. Take a look at the chart below to see how those minutes and days out of school can really add up.
