In-person ISTEP testing for 11th-grade students set for Feb. 2-5

In-person ISTEP testing for 11th-grade students will be taking place from Tuesday, Feb. 2-Friday, Feb. 5. Attendance for these tests is extremely important. Please make sure that you do not schedule any appointments or other obligations during this time.


Students in grades 9, 10, 12 will be Virtual Learners and have asynchronous lessons on Canvas to complete each day.


Students in Grade 11 will be testing in-person in both math and English and must be in attendance all 4 days.


Participation and achievement on the ISTEP impact school accountability and student graduation status, so it is critical for students to be at school, on time, and ready to test.


Parents/Guardians, please make sure that your student gets a good night’s sleep and has something to eat prior to the morning of testing. These factors will increase the probability of success on the test.


We know our students will do well and we appreciate your support with communicating this information to your child. Below, you will find the specific schedule for both math and English testing.

Chromebooks:

It is also important to make sure that students arrive in class with a school-issued Chromebook that is fully charged. We request that students also bring their Chromebook charger with them on testing days, in case it is needed throughout the day. ISTEP+ will be taken online so it is imperative for each student to have it during testing.

Please contact the Director of Testing, David Hall (dhall@phm.k12.in.us), if there will be an unavoidable absence on one of the testing days.


Transportation:

If you will need bus transportation to and/or from school on these days, it will be available. If you are not currently routed or do not ride regularly, please use the Infofinder link on the PHM website to help you find the bus stop nearest you: http://www.infofinderi.com/ifi/?cid=PSC50MPD74LB. After entering your address, it will show you the closest elementary, middle, high school, and Pennway stops. Please be sure to find the nearest high school stop. It will also provide you with approximate pick up and drop off times.

Startup Moxie applications now being accepted

What is Startup Moxie?


Startup Moxie is a four-credit high school class and a 16 dual-college credit Ivy Tech class open to all junior and senior students in the South Bend area. Classes run from 7:30-9:00 am Monday to Friday, where students have the opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial spirit and learn from leaders in our community about their business ventures, life experiences, and their perspective on the South Bend – Elkhart region.


Who Should Apply?


We are looking for dynamic, energetic, and curious students from all subject areas who like to create and make stuff happen, who are willing to fail fast and fail forward, and would like to make impactful change in our community.

P-H-M seeks bus drivers

P-H-M is in need of Bus Drivers.


All drivers begin as Sub Drivers and are guaranteed four hours of work a day at a rate of $19.75/hr. Once a driver is elevated to a route driver they will continue to be guaranteed four hours of work per day. Their pay will be increased to $21.61/hr and they will have opportunities to drive field trips, and athletic events. Trip pay is $13/hr with a minimum pay on a trip being $30. After 60 days of work they will be elevated to a rate of $22.33/hr. These wages are effective 1/1/2021 and all training is provided by the Penn-Harris-Madison Transportation Department.

Free school meals offered

FREE SCHOOL MEALS FOR HYBRID STUDENTS: On Wednesdays and Fridays each week, students who are on a hybrid schedule can pick up three free meals before they leave for the day.


Students can stop into the IMC or Door K to collect these meal packages.

Virtual student free meal pick-up moving to Door K

Free Meal pick-up for virtual students will be moving to Door K on the south side of the school.


Dates and times will remain Wednesday and Friday from 4-6 p.m.


Door K is off Jefferson next to the playground on the practice football field side.

Free Lunch!

Thanks to a USDA waiver, all meals served to students at P-H-M will be free when there is in-school learning until further notice.


Student accounts will be charged for any ala-carte sales.


Penn High School will offer pre-packaged breakfasts. Students will select pre-packaged meal components in the cafeteria.


Penn will also be offering take-home meals for students. The meals will cover the days when students are learning from home. Meals will be given out at the end of the day on Wednesday and Friday in the IMC or Door K. The package will contain three breakfast and three lunch meals. Items will be frozen if possible and bags will have heating and storage instructions.


Parents who do not want their student to have a free meal may donate the money to our fund for students who do not have money for meals. Contact Jill Riggs at jriggs@phm.k12.in.us to donate. We are able to do the free meals due to a temporary waiver from the USDA. This will most likely last no longer than this semester. Money currently on student accounts will remain for their later use.

Return to Learn safety protocols

This document outlines our Return to Learn safety protocols as it relates to arrival and dismissal procedures, passing periods, lunch and classroom instruction.

Report student COVID-19 related symptom information to Penn

As we anticipate the return of students, Penn High School students will need to be screened at home each morning for symptoms of COVID-19 before reporting to the school for learning.


If a student presents one or more COVID-19 related symptoms, this information must be communicated to the school attendance office - 258-9501.


The following list shares those symptoms.

  • Temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher when taken by the mouth

  • New onset of severe headache, especially with fever

  • New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing

  • Sore throat

  • Loss of taste or smell

  • Diarrhea, vomiting or abdominal pain


Any student with one or more COVID-19 related symptom must stay home. If the student is at school, the student must be picked up within one hour of the parent being contacted. An additional conversation will need to take place with school officials to determine the correct plan of action. The student showing symptoms of COVID-19 could be subject to a 14-day quarantine.

PTO introduction, update

The Penn PTO welcomes you to join us for the 2020-2021 school year. While this year may look diferent, the purpose of the PTO is still vital.


Over the past 3 years, the Penn PTO has provided grants to teachers, student groups, clubs, and organizations who apply during our fall grant cycle. The PTO also assists with volunteer opportunities, hosts the annual Snowball Dance, which is open to all grade levels 9-12, provides monthly teacher/staff appreciation events/recognition, and meets monthly to keep lines of communication open between parents, students, and administration. Republican Club to meet on Feb. 4

The Penn Republican Club will be meeting Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7:45 a.m. in Room 241. This meeting will also be available in a virtual setting and last 30 minutes. Please be on time.

At this meeting we will discuss fundraising options for the charities of our choice as well as club t-shirts.


We will also identify state and local leaders that we would like to entertain in the coming months as well as Republican Party events that you can attend in the near future.


If time permits, we will have a short open forum for comments on Freedom of Speech, the most recent election, as well as the state of politics in our country.

Kingsmen Community Care Club

We are so excited to be back! Our club, Kingsmen Community Care, is still happening this year.


Kingsmen Community Care is a partnership with the Center for the Homeless in South Bend.


In the past year we hosted many donation drives and hosted two events for the children that live there, a Fall Festival and a Movie Night. Although we cannot be in person for quite some time this year, we do have many exciting things planned.


Our meetings will be on an Instagram live for followers or anyone else that would like access. We then will be saving the livestream and emailing it out so that the information can be watched at your convenience. To share your email and to be put on our email list please email either ehenderson006@phm.k12.in.us or cperkins023@phm.k12.in.us or contact Mrs. Weaver with any further questions you may have. We are very excited for this year and hope you are too!

Girls Lacrosse Winter Workouts start on Tuesday, Jan. 19.


The workouts the week of Jan. 19 will be:


  • Tuesday, Jan. 19, 7-9 p.m. at Grissom Middle School
  • Wednesday Jan. 20, 7-9 p.m. at Schmucker Middle School
  • Thursday, Jan. 21, 7-9 p.m. at Grissom Middle School


After that All Tuesdays and Thursdays will be at Grissom from 7-9 p.m., and Wednesdays will be at Schmucker from 7-9 p.m.

Girls Track pre-conditioning to start after Jan. 15

Attention all girls going out for and those interested in going out for Girls Track and Field ...


We will begin pre-conditioning after Jan. 15. In the meantime, Coach Danner will post voluntary workouts on our Girls Track Canvas page. If you were not out for track last year, you will just need to register on Register My Athlete (Fill out the Health History Questionnaire, make sure your physical is up to date, and sign up for Girls Track) in order to be added to the Girls Track Canvas page. If you think you have done this, but don't have access to Girls Track and Field Canvas page, email Coach Danner at mdanner@phm.k12.in.us to let her know.


Please remember to wear your masks and social distance when not at home. These precautions will help us to have a safe and healthy track season.

Bittersweet Railroad Crossing Alert

The railroad tracks at Bittersweet Rd. (just north of McKinley) are active, but do not have warning lights or crossing arms. Please use caution approaching these tracks.


Stop signs have been installed on Bittersweet Rd. (north of McKinley) at the railroad crossing. Stop signs have also been added on Cedar Trail, Birch Road, Apple Road, and Ash Rd. (County Line). Please use caution and be aware of the new stops on routes to Penn.

Student may only ride on assigned bus

Students may only ride on their assigned bus. Students are not allowed to ride the bus home with their friends.

Student before-school drop-off procedures

The designated student morning drop-off at Penn High School is in the Jefferson Rd. Student Parking Lot (south of the football practice field). All entrances will open for students at 8:35 unless there is a previously scheduled appointment. Students must then report to door A.

Skyward and student progress

All parents and guardians are encouraged to review Skyward information for your student. General directions are listed below to access Skyward. Please take some time to review student progress and encourage your student to develop a plan for any missing work.


Also, we recently realized that Skyward has not been sending out notifications to parents/guardians for missing assignments or low grades. This will be fixed next week. Parents will then be able to set individual preferences for future notifications.

School fees available to pay through Skyward

Fees for the 2020/2021 school year are now available in Skyward. Please log into your Skyward Family Access Account to see your student’s fees. These fees will not change through the school year, even if your student drops or adds courses.


You have several options as to how you may pay this bill. Your payment options are:


1. You may send your payment with your student to the Bookstore. We accept check, money order, or cash.


2. You may mail your payment to:
