Stem Update!
Academics - All classes have been involved in classroom STEM experiences this quarter as they study Physical Science. Grade level explorations have included: Kindergarten – Forces and Motion, 1st grade - Sound and Light; 2nd grade - States of Matter, 3rd grade - Motion and Matter, and 4th grade - Energy and Electricity. In addition, second and fourth grade classes have also been learning robotics with Mrs. Benson in the STEM room. These lessons utilize our Lego WeDo robotics kits (2nd grade) and Lego NXT Robots (4th grade) to teach more programming and the use of sensors to control robot actions. These kits, provided by generous grants from the Zionsville Education Foundation, allow students to work on collaborative problem solving and to apply their coding skills to real world situations. We have so much fun with them! Up next, fourth quarter’s classroom STEM focus will be on topics of Earth and Space science for first through fourth grades. Kindergarten students will work on engineering.
Family STEM Projects - To complement our earth and space focus in the classrooms, we will have a Family STEM Project that also focuses on our environment. Be on the lookout for instructions to come home before spring break! We’ll display them during Earth Week in April.
Girls Who Code Club – We are looking to start a 3rd and 4th grade coding club through a partnership with “Girls Who Code” organization. We are in need of a couple of female parent volunteers to work with this club next fall. If you are a 2nd or 3rd grade parent who might be interested in sharing your time with our students or would like more information, please contact Mrs. Benson. She will be providing guidance to the club volunteers as things get underway.

Wellness Night Reminder:
This year’s Wellness Night is less than a month away! On March 18th, students and families can come to BME from 6-7:30 and participate in this years’ “Global Games” Wellness Night. Wellness stations, activities, and games will be spread throughout the school highlighting the countries that they originated.

Zionsville Community Schools Parent Safety Academy
The Parent School Safety Academy is a unique program to Zionsville Community Schools that will inform parents about school safety principles and fundamentals that guide response protocols in our schools. This program will not reveal details that would compromise safety at Zionsville Community Schools but will provide parents with a basic understanding of school safety practices and allow for attendee participation.
During this interactive program, parent participants will learn about national and state safety practices, current trends in school safety, and how these practices and trends impact safety planning at Zionsville Community Schools.

BYOD (bring your own device) Computer Purchase Option
This time of year, the ZCS Technology Department is asked quite often, “what kind of computer should I get my student for the Bring Your Own Device 1:1 program in grades 5th-12th?”
Normally we just give the minimum specs for the computers, but this year we have worked with Lenovo to provide our families with an option to purchase the same device that ZCS uses for the rental program. It will be at the same discounted price ZCS pays ($506), tax free, and shipped to your door with free shipping in 2-3 weeks. If you wish to purchase instead of rent the device we selected as a technology team for its ruggedness and performance, just follow the link below and create an account with Lenovo.

Volunteers and Visitor Background Checks
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS
We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.
Examples include:
- Field Trip Chaperones
- Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
- Tutors
- Volunteer Coaches
- Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
- Library Helpers
- After Prom Workers
- Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
- Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales
During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years. CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.
Examples Include:
- Lunch Guests
- Classroom Guest Speakers
- Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
- Parent/Teacher Conferences
We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.
