Assessing Print Awareness
Ask a child to show you:
The front of the book, The title of the book, Where you should begin reading, A letter, A word, The first word of a sentence, Punctuation marks, A capital letter, A lowercase letter, The back of the bookZero to Three Literacy Tips
The first three years of life are when children learn the fastest, and acquire the foundational skills that will support their development and learning for the rest of their lives. The main goal of emergent literacy from birth through age three is supporting development in the area of language, which provides a foundation for learning literacy skills, and is necessary at all levels of literacy (Scarborough, 2001).
Book Sharing
Engaging with Books to Support Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Love of Reading
- Start reading with babies at birth, read with them often.
- Foster a love of reading by making book-sharing engaging and fun.
- Make book-sharing interactive to support comprehension and vocabulary.
Sound Play
Encourage and respond to all sounds, from first coos to words and sentences
● With young infants, use infant-directed speech to get and keep babies’ attention.
● Draw children’s attention to the sounds of words
● Rhyme time and similar sounds.
Responding
High quality language interactions are central to supporting early language skills. Infants and toddlers need to hear a rich variety of language that is directly related to their attention and interests, and to be encouraged to communicate through all the ways they can – with their facial expressions, hands and bodies, and voices.
