Mrs. VanNostrand's 3rd Grade News
December 2019 .
I hope you had an enjoyable five days with your family. I spent a lot of quality time unplugged from technology and making the most of every minute.
English Language Arts
We are finishing up our study of non-fiction this week. There was an emphasis on expository and narrative non-fiction. It is my hope that the students were able to find a balance between reading fiction and non-fiction.
The overall goal of this unit was to make sure students realize that they need to read differently based on the type of book they are reading.
Math
Next week, we will be finishing our study of Unit 2 Introduction to Multiplication. Our goal is to finish the unit Monday with a review on Tuesday and the assessment on Wednesday. The Unit 3 Parent Letter is attached to this email. I have had two requests for a paper copy and it will be sent home on Monday.
Science
We are completing our unit Structures of Life this week. Our final investigations involve the skeletal system and owl pellet observations. The students have truly enjoyed this unit from growing seeds to exploring crayfish.
Postcard Exchange
I'm excited to share that we received our first postcard in our exchange with over 35 states. Our first postcard was from Washington. I can't wait to share this tomorrow including scratching off the first state on our map of the US.

Scholastic Book Order
Interested in ordering books and helping us get free books for our classroom? Then please consider ordering through our Scholastic Book Order. Click on the link and place your order today. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is one of the most checked out books in our classroom library. The bin has been empty all year. I'd love to be able to use Scholastic points to make more available.
In November, every student received a free copy of The Bad Seed by Jory John. Thanks to family and friends that donated to my classroom this year.
Shout Out to Our Student Council Representatives
Last week, Ananda and Anthony assisted Mr. Belcourt and me with a presentation on collaboration. They did a great job!
