The WAVA Wave

April 1, 2016

A Message from our Principal...

Last year I shared this idea and am choosing to share it again, because it is important. This idea reverses, maybe a common thought. We work hard and can’t wait for the weekend or break, this different idea reverses this thinking, and says “Work out your rest.” Meaning, knowing there is work ahead, get the rest now so the work ahead can be the best work that can be done. It also shifts the focus from, “Ugh, when will I be done?” to, “I’ve rested and now I can be excellent in what I am doing!” I hope this spring break offered opportunity for rest, ensuring that your best effort is ahead to finish the year strong…as we know, effort creates ability! Remember, what you do and what you say matters every single day at WAVA! With appreciation…

(PS – Hope to see you at one of the Town Hall Meetings following Spring Break --- Great things are happening!!)

The Counselor Connect

Happy April, WAVA Families! This month I wanted to focus on conflict resolution, as this is often a topic we are faced with in our daily lives as parents. Whether kids are bickering with us, their friends, or their siblings, it can be difficult to know how to best approach the situation. It’s important to remember that conflict is part of life – As parents, we need to help our kids develop the skills for working through conflict positively, not avoiding it all together.

When you have a moment, I recommend bookmarking the KidsHealth website, so you can get quick tips on how to handle all kinds of parenting situations, as you need them. The link below is to an article on the KidsHealth website about conflict resolution that is meant especially for kids. Your child might enjoy reading, or listening to, this article. They may even want to explore the links at the bottom (Getting Along with Brothers and Sisters is another great article for kids!).

As always, please feel free to call or k-mail me directly, with questions, or to discuss specific situations.

K-3 Families - Important Information Regarding Hearing and Vision

You have received information regarding the Hearing and Vision program. It is very important for you to check your k-mail and/or LC email and fill out the survey even if you don’t plan to participate.

It is critical that all families fill out the survey so we can have the proper data we need to plan for next school year and to ensure each child is receiving these services.

Also, some families have opted in for Hearing and Vision program but have not yet completed the screening. If this is you, please complete the screening as soon as possible. Please check you LC email for the information.

The calls that families have been receiving are because they have not filled out the survey or have filled out the survey but have not completed the screening.

If you feel like you are receiving the calls in error or have any questions, please contact our Testing Logistics Coordinator, Jazmine McCoy at jamccoy@k12.com or KMAIL her.

It's that time of year again! State testing is right around the corner.

3rd - 5th graders will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment, SBA, for English Language Arts and Math. This will done over 2 days, 1 day for each subject.

5th graders will also be taking the Measurements of Student Progress, MSP, for Science. This assessment will take place over 1 day.

Testing will start right after spring break. It is very important to read and respond to any emails or k-mails you receive about state testing as there is important information about site locations and times.

Can I opt out of state testing? Click here for more information.

Tips from Cheryl

Home Management

By Cheryl Holbrook

Start the night before.

Whaaat? Yes. That’s right a few minutes the night before will make a HUGE difference the next day.

  • Lay out everyone’s clothes (that you have to decide on) the night before, including your own.
  • Make sure your kitchen is clean and ready to go.
  • Have your to do list for the next day finalized.
  • Know what you are making for meals the next day and lay out anything from the freezer that needs to be thawed in the fridge overnight.
  • Check your calendar for a quick view of your day tomorrow.
