January 16, 2020 - Update
A friendly reminder that there is no school on Monday, January 20th.
Message from the Health Office
All of us at TES wish you a happy and healthy New Year! We have a few reminders from the Health Office as we begin 2020.
Parents of 3rd & 4th Grade Students: Please continue to send in your child’s physical examinations and immunization records as you receive them this year. All children entering the 4th grade must show proof of a physical exam.
Wellness screenings: Our 5th, 4th, 3rd, & kindergarten vision and hearing screenings are complete. If your child received a referral for vision and hearing, kindly make sure your child is seen by a provider in a timely manner and return the referral to the Health Office as soon as possible. Postural screenings for 5th grade students will be starting in March and will continue until completed. If your child is under the care of a physician for scoliosis, please contact the Health Office with an update. Postural screening referrals will be sent home if follow up care is recommended. Please periodically check your child’s backpack for a letter from the Health Office.
REMINDERS:
Illnesses: As per school policy, if your child has been sick, (vomiting, fever over 100, communicable illness such as strep) they must stay home from school. Students need to be fever free without the use of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, no vomiting, and no diarrhea for 24 hours before they are able to return to school. For illnesses requiring antibiotics such as strep throat, students need to be on antibiotic therapy AND fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. For common viruses/coughs and colds it is not usually appropriate to keep children out of school for the duration of symptoms, however the student’s cough should be manageable and your child should be eating and drinking adequately.
We have been seeing an increase in student illnesses since school resumed after winter break. Frequent hand washing at home and in school is a must to limit illness transmission! Please adhere to the school illness policy if your child is sick.
We would appreciate being notified if your child has been to the doctor’s office and confirmed with any communicable illness. It is our priority to keep all students safe and healthy to maximize every child’s time in the classroom.
It is not too late to get a flu vaccination if your child has not received it yet. Contact your primary care physician or the Health Office for more information.
CLOTHING:
All students should be dressed appropriately for the weather daily. Coat, hat, and gloves should be worn and provided by parent/guardian.
Please be sure your child has an extra set of clothes in their locker! If your child does not have a change of clothing you will be called to bring your child a change of clothes.
MEDICATION POLICY:
A written order from a physician is required to administer both prescription AND over the counter medication in the school setting (this includes cough drops). The nurse can administer short-term prescription medications such as antibiotics without a written physician’s order, as long as the original prescription container is provided and written parental consent is obtained.
Refillable water bottles are strongly encouraged to keep the children hydrated throughout the day. In addition to keeping the children properly hydrated, water helps to soothe sore throats and quiets coughs. Please send your child to school with a refillable water bottle daily to keep on their desks.
Please contact the Health Office at 978-649-1990 ext. 4 with any questions or concerns.

A Parent's Guide to Social Emotional Learning
https://www.edutopia.org/SEL-parents-resources?utm_content=buffer3485e&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=bufferSchool Cancellation/Delayed Opening Message from Superintendent Flanagan
It is hard to believe that we are already in November and that the first trimester wraps up in a few weeks. This morning I was watching the weather forecast for the week and some are predicting potential snow for this Friday. Though I do not believe it will impact our commute too much, this does seem like an ideal time to explain the process that we use to make decisions about school cancellations and delays, as well as outline our communication plan.
When there is a chance of snow and/or ice impacting the morning commute, I first contact Steve Coughlan, our Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds at 4:45 a.m. Steve will communicate directly with the highway department and police department to assess current travel conditions and relay that information to me. I use this time to monitor local satellite projections, weather forecasts and a regional superintendent communication chain to arrive at a decision as to whether or not a school cancellation or delay will occur. I strive to make this decision by 5:45 a.m. at the latest. In some instances, the forecast allows us to make a decision the evening before, at which point I will communicate the decision immediately.
The first notice of communication will be via our school communication platform, which includes a text message, email, and links to my twitter account @DrMFlanagan. After this initial communication, I then contact the local major television networks to inform them of the decision so that it appears on the school cancellation scroll. I have also asked building principals to utilize their school social media platforms to communicate the message as well.
I recognize that there are varying opinions of when a school district should cancel or delay. Please know that I make the decision based upon the most current road conditions as well as the length, timing and projection of the individual storm. Our primary goal is to keep students safe as they travel to and from school.
Thank you,
Dr. Flanagan
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Student Information Form
Recently, an email was sent in regards to completing the Student Information Form. The information form, accessible through the parent portal, is used to collect items such as family information, emergency contact data, and medical permissions. It is crucial that you complete this form as soon as possible. Failure to submit this form will affect your student’s ability to attend field trips, participate in after-school activities, and receive medications from the school nurse.
