Soldotna Area Schools
Reconfiguration Newsletter 10/24/2013
Advisory Committee Work is almost complete.
During a work session of the KPBSD School Board on November 4th at 4:30pm, the Advisory Committee will present the process, outcomes, and recommendations arrived at during the discussions they have had since September 10th. This work session will precede a regular board meeting that will begin at 7pm. If members of the community wish to address elements of the advisory committee's report, or any other non-agenda item during the board meeting, the opportunity will be available during the regular board meeting. (Public presentations or comments are limited to three minutes each.) The Board Meeting Agenda will be available on the KPBSD website kpbsd.k12.ak.us, after October 30, 2013.
Copied from the October 9th newsletter:
Consensus was reached on the following issues:
We recommend-
- The middle school be named: Skyview Middle School
- The ninth grade school be named: Soldotna Prep
- The middle school mascot be: the Panther
- The ninth grade school and 10-12 school mascots be: the Star
- The available colors for all schools be: Blue, Purple, Black and White. (this palette opens the possibility but does not require, additions of complementary highlights)
The last two items discussed were school names for the 10-12 school and how to preserve cultural and historic elements.
The result of the discussion surrounding the school name is pictured below. This chart reflects the comparison between naming the 10-12 school "Soldotna High School," and "Soldotna Central High School." We will present this process and outcome during the board meeting. We will also acknowledge a letter presented to the advisory committee concerning the current Soldotna Middle School. This letter was presented after the middle school name, mascot, and color had been discussed during previous meetings.
Finally, the committee recommends that the current student body of all schools involved, with the guidance of staff, develop and plan the transfer and preservation of all cultural and historic elements.
I would like to thank the members of the Advisory Committee for being willing to have the "hard discussions."
The next big topic is staffing. Discussions are currently underway to prepare for a November 11 administrative meeting. The agenda of this meeting is solely staffing. If all the bricks fall into place, we will make or beat the projected date of announcements of the staffing on January 15, 2014.
The final chart
This will be the artifact referred to during the work session to describe the discussion around the naming of the 10-12 school.
What is important to the current students?
During a meeting of the joint Associated Student Bodies, students were asked to reflect on what is most important to the current students.
Already working together.
With the guidance of dedicated and skilled staff, the students are well on their way to working out the details of the reconfiguration.
A thousand words.
