Westside Middle School
September 3, 2021
Please make sure you are sending your student with a mask each day. It is also a great idea to send them with an extra one especially on PE days. Overall the students are doing a great job of wearing their mask, but please continue to remind them to make sure it is covering their mouth and nose at all times.
Please also have your student bring a water bottle to school. The water fountains are shut off, but we do have water bottle filling stations.

MAP Assessment
Your student will soon be taking the Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®) assessment. This is one assessment tool our school district uses to help determine what your child is ready to learn and to measure academic growth throughout the school year. MAP® assessments are untimed, but each will take approximately 60 minutes to complete.
MAP assessments will begin the week of Sep. 13. Math will be taken in Math class on Sept 13th and 14th. Reading portion will be done in Language Arts class Sept 20th and 21st.
MAP® assessments are aligned with Nebraska State Standards and also provide early projections for college and career readiness. MAP® assessments are unique in that they adapt to your child’s level of readiness to learn. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward the MAP® assessments.
MAP® assessment results, in the form of a RIT score (Rausch Unit), let teachers know where a student’s strengths are and what support may be needed in specific areas. Teachers use this information to guide their instruction in the classroom. MAP® outcomes also help to inform decision making in program offerings.

Parent AHERA Notifications for 2021-2022 School Year
Annual AHERA Notice
The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA) requires each public school district to annually notify parents, staff, and employee groups of its asbestos management plans. A management plan is in place for Westside Middle School and is available for review either at the school building or at the Westside Service Center, 9437 J St. Omaha, NE.
This school building was originally inspected in the1980’s and re-inspected by a certified inspector every three years thereafter. The three-year re-inspection and a ceiling tile inspection was conducted in 2019, and periodic surveillance will be conducted as required. No abatement activities are currently in progress or scheduled for the 2021-2022 school year at this building.
The Designated Person responsible for managing the District’s AHERA compliance and the contact person for questions or to review a management plan is the Director of Facilities, Russ Olsen (402) 390-8331.
