Celebrating Academic Success

Our first nine weeks has been one that celebrated a variety of student academic honors to include:


  • National recognition from the College Board
  • Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program
  • All A's Ceremony
  • Academic Jacket Ceremony


Recipients of academic honors from the College Board have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. They’re the top 10% of PSAT/NMSQT® or PSAT™ 10 assessment takers in each state for each program or have earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP® Exams.

District Chorus

Congratulations to all students who auditioned for the District IV Chorus! Each student sang the solo “Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind” and sight-read a musical example for judges last weekend. We are so proud of everyone who auditioned! Students selected will learn four choral pieces for the District IV Choral Event on February 9 and 10, 2024. 9th and 10th grade Sopranos and Altos will sing with the Treble Choir. 11th and 12th grade Sopranos and Altos, and all Tenors and Basses will sing with the Mixed Choir. Singers selected from District IV will rehearse together on February 9 and 10, and will perform in a concert on February 10. These students also qualified to audition for All-State Chorus on February 8. Way to go, singing Packers!

Fall 2023 Child Find Dates

In an attempt to actively identify, locate and evaluate children 2 through 21, who are in need of special education services and/or protection under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Isle of Wight County Schools will be holding Child Find Screenings on the dates listed below.


If you suspect that your child may have delays and/or disabilities, please join us for a brief screening of your child’s fine and gross motor skills, speech language development and cognitive abilities.

Parent Interest Meeting

Huntington Ingalls has a representative that will be at SHS working with the welding students. The program is called SEEKnns and is designed so that students who wish to work for the shipyard will have direct access to a representative to answer questions and streamline the application process. That representative will be available to meet with any parent -- including those who don't have students in the welding program -- from 5:30 - 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 in the SHS cafeteria.

Support SHS Chorus at the Mistletoe Market!

Please come to support the SHS Chorus at our bake sale booth in Smithfield’s annual Mistletoe Marketplace on November 18 from 3 - 8pm on Main Street in Smithfield! We will be selling home baked goods, SHS Chorus hoodies, SHS lanyards, and more! Tickets to the Suffolk Cultural Arts Center concert will also be available. If you stop by around 6pm, then you will hear the Choraliers sing on the gazebo right next to our booth! Happy holidays!


More SHS Chorus news! Tickets to the “Choraliers Carol by Candlelight” concerts at St. Luke’s Historic Church are sold out! Thank you to all who have reserved their seat at a concert to support the Choraliers as we raise funds to travel to Washington, D.C. and Maryland for a competition in May of 2024! If you missed your opportunity to get a ticket to St. Luke’s, then come support us performing the same program at the Suffolk Cultural Arts Center on December 9 at 4pm. Tickets are $10 if purchased in advance, and $15 at the door. Please contact Mrs. West at kwest@iwcs.k12.va.us to buy your ticket in person at SHS. Online ticket purchasing information coming next week.

Family Life Education

Family Life Education will be conducted on November 20th and November 21st for all students currently enrolled in Health/PE 9 and Driver education/PE 10 classes. Parents may opt their child out of these lessons by completing the opt out form and returning to the student’s instructor.

Senior quotes for the yearbook

Seniors: Share a little bit about your personality by including a quote under your senior portrait in the yearbook! The deadline to submit your quote is Friday, Dec. 1. Submit via this Google Form: https://forms.gle/P6h6P1dHSjr5jX4P7


All quotes must be school appropriate and should be no more than 150 characters. Please use quotation marks and include the author of your quote in your submission. Yearbook staff and SHS administration reserve the right to reject your quote if it doesn't meet guidelines.


Examples of what is NOT acceptable:

  • References to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, gangs

  • Foul language

  • Quotes that are sexual or contain vulgar innuendo

  • Nonsense or inside jokes

  • Anything that belittles another person's ethnicity, religious/political beliefs, sexuality, gender, physical/mental ability


Good questions to ask yourself: Does this quote stand the test of time? How will I feel when my parents and the community see this?
