Weekly News and Updates - Volume 2 Issue 6 - 9/24/21

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn

Can you smell it in the air? The crisp winds of autumn, leaves beginning to turn, cinnamon, the desert sands blown in. Autumn is here and all the wonderful changes it brings. Today marks the end of our fourth week of school- the first checkpoint on the journey. Now it's time to fine-tune our established processes and systems to best serve our students, staff, families, and community. Next week we will be practicing our first evacuation drill. These will occur on a monthly basis. Please talk with your student(s) this weekend about the importance of taking these drills seriously so they're prepared in the unlikely event of a real emergency. You might even create an evacuation plan for your own home. At the bottom of the newsletter, you'll find a link to a resource to support with that conversation.

This upcoming month we have a lot of great opportunities to get involved and learn more about the school. On September 30th, our PTA is hosting a Meet & Greet informational gathering in the park from 5-6:30PM. Then, on October 6th, we'll be hosting our first monthly Java with Jeff (virtually) from 5-6PM. This month we'll be discussing how Title I funding positively impacts student learning here at Fletcher and will conclude with an open forum for all sorts of questions.

"We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to welcome kids back to vibrant new interactive ways of learning. It would be a great shame if we didn't seize that opportunity."

- Robert Jenkins

Chief of Education, UNICEF, New York City

Celebrating Latinx Heritage Month

Latinx Heritage month is September 15 - October 15. Each week, we'll be featuring a different resource for teachers and families to access for a greater understanding of the Latinx experience and cultural history in the United States. This week check out the webpage of the National Archives that chronicles the history of Latinx Americans throughout the centuries, and the impact made in all spaces of public life.

Art Reach is coming in October

Art Reach is back at Fletcher with weekly lessons taught by a professional artist starting October 4th. Mrs. Yasmine Kasem will begin weekly lessons with each class that focus on the essential elements of artwork: color, line, shape, form, and texture. These foundational skills will prepare our students for the spring when we create our school mural.
