Engage Every Family: Five Simple Principles™
Leader, teacher, speaker, and best-selling author Dr. Steve Constantino has a long and distinguished career working at the school, district, and state levels and is considered one of the nation’s leading authorities in the area of family and community engagement.
Dr. Constantino’s work quickly gained national prominence and soon he began traveling the United States speaking and working with educators to promote sound practices in the leadership of organizations and the leveraging of family engagement as an essential element in increased academic achievement for all students.
Dr. Constantino has developed the “Five Simple Principles to Engage Every Family” as a way to help every school harness the power of family engagement as a direct conduit to student achievement.
His model is designed to place into a hierarchical order the principles by which true family engagement and the ultimate development and nurturing of family efficacy can be implemented and measured. The model supports the notion that there is a process to successful family engagement practice.
His latest book outlines a pathway and process to engage every family, including those families that have been traditionally disengaged or disenfranchised. Based on research, it includes:
– Reflections about implicit bias, equitable learning outcomes, and the role family engagement plays;
– A deeper dive into the idea of family efficacy, or empowering families to work alongside teachers for improved learning; and
– A nuanced switch from building to developing relationships, and how trust is at the core of that subtle difference.
We have purchased each of our PACE Liaison's a copy of his latest book, Engage Every Family: Five Simple Principles, Second Edition, which will be delivered to you at your school by the end of the school year.
We hope that you enjoy reading it...maybe poolside/beachside! :)
Keeping PACE: Edgewood Middle School
Each week in the HCPS 411 Update, the Parent Academy releases a new video showcasing a school/program that demonstrates a best practice related to one of the six National PTA Standards. Additionally, the videos are archived on the Parent Academy page on hcps.org for reference. This series serves as a way to highlight and recognize the good work happening in our schools and create an opportunity to share ideas within our system.
Please take a moment to watch Edgewood Middle School Principal Melissa Williams and Social Worker and PACE Liaison Alexis Frazier share about their school’s successful family engagement events, like Cook With Me Family Night, which are excellent examples of PTA Standard 1: Welcoming All Families Into the School Community and PTA Standard 6: Collaborating With Community.
