Past Visiting Author, Jacqueline Goldberg
Last week, Mann students had the opportunity to hear from a visiting author.
Jacqueline Goldberg (poet, fiction writer, essayist, journalist; Venezuela) is the author of six books of prose, 10 children’s books, and 20 volumes of poetry. Her novel Las horas claras [The Clear Hours] received the 2012 prize of Fundación para la Cultura Urbana, was the Venezuelan Booksellers’ Book of the Year, a finalist for the Critic’s Award Novel for 2013, and was re-published in Mexico in 2018. Goldberg frequently speaks at literature and at food festivals. Her participation is made possible by the US Embassy in Caracas.
Upcoming Visiting Author: Bryan Collier
The ICCSD is very excited to have Bryan Collier as our visiting author/illustrator this year. These author and illustrator visits rotate through the grades, and this year First and Second Graders will get to enjoy his visit to Horace Mann and Lincoln Elementary Schools.
Ahead of his visit, you are welcome to purchase books that he will autograph. These are the only books he will have time to sign. There are 3 titles available for purchase: "Martin's Big Words", "It's Shoe Time!", and "Trombone Shorty".
If you would like to buy a title for your family, please either buy it online here through revtrak (see the "Visiting Author" square in the bottom right): https://iowa-city.revtrak.net/

Lincoln & Mann Halloween Parade and Class Party
It’s time to start gearing up for our Halloween parade and class party. This year we will be parading with Lincoln students on the grounds of Hoover East in the latter part of the school day. Students and staff may participate in this event by bringing a costume (no toy weapons) to school on October 31. Costumes are optional. Please send costumes that are easy for students to change into and out of independently.
This year students will parade out the north doors along the blacktop path on the playground and re-enter the building through the south doors in the early childhood wing. Parents are welcome to observe the parade on the playground and may enter the playground at the south gate beginning at 1:45 PM. After we parade, students will have a class party in their classroom before dismissal time.
In the event of rain, the parade will be cancelled. Please watch for a Blackboard Connect text message by 1:00 PM if we decide to cancel the parade .
KinderTales: A Storytelling Adventure for Kindergarteners
Iowa City Community School District kindergartners will visit The Iowa Children’s Museum (ICM) sometime between the end of October through the beginning of March for KinderTales: A Storytelling Adventure. Mann Kindergarteners are scheduled to attend during the morning of December 6.
KinderTales is an active learning experience at The Iowa Children’s Museum (ICM) designed to help students strengthen their abilities to communicate thoughts and feelings in an articulate, confident manner. During the visit to The Iowa Children’s Museum, students will engage in 90 minutes of activities led by museum educators and school chaperones and then enjoy 30 minutes of free play in the museum.
New Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP)
There is a new Iowa statewide assessment that will be administered this spring. In past years, students in grades 3-11 participated in fall Iowa Assessments or Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. The Iowa Assessments and Iowa Tests of Basic Skills will no longer be administered. The new Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) will be administered online during the week of April 8, 2019.
The Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) are new assessments developed by Iowa Testing Programs at the University of Iowa for the state of Iowa. The assessments are aligned with the Iowa Core standards and provide a clear and accurate assessment of student learning outcomes. Student growth, proficiency and readiness indicators will be reported. We anticipate the results of the 2019 ISASP spring assessment will not be available until sometime during the summer months.
The new assessments will be administered statewide between March and May 2019 and will be available in online and paper formats. The ICCSD will be using the online format. The ISASP will be administered during the week of April 8, 2019 to students in grades 3-11. The grade levels, tests, and recommended administration times are provided in the photo below.
ISASP will be delivered and supported by Iowa-based Pearson, ensuring local support in the implementation process and rapid-response to questions. State appropriations will help defray the cost of the ISASP to Iowa schools.
DEVELOPMENT ISASP was developed in collaboration with Iowa educators and students. As part of the development process, Iowa Testing Programs (ITP) contracted with Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO) to conduct an external and independent alignment study. The goal of this study was to confirm that the assessment appropriately assesses the breadth and depth of the Iowa Core. As a part of this process, HumRRO conducted workshops where 40 Iowa educators were trained to perform the alignment tasks.
Gracias!
