Writing to Learn: Even Better with Technology
Consider these questions when implementing Writing to Learn in your classroom:
- Are students using writing to clarify their thinking about a subject?
- Is the writing helping students interpret, analyze, or synthesize their thinking about key content/concepts?
- How are students sharing and collaborating on their writing with their peers?
- Are you providing high quality prompts for your students to write?
Good writing can occur without technology and students should experience it due to current standardized tests requiring it. However, it's quite likely that future tests will be electronic. Finding a balance is key.
Here are some ways students can take advantage of Google Docs for Writing to Learn.
- Reflective Writing- method of showing comprehension of lesson, brainstorm ideas based on lesson, etc
- Ongoing Journaling- daily entries of an ongoing unit of study, can include comments from the teacher
- Jigsaw Activities- each member of a small group gets a piece of the same shared doc, provide advise by using the comment or suggesting feature built in
You or your students can start a Google Doc simply by visiting http://docs.google.com
