Ocean
Ocean
You will be learning about basic ocean facts, ocean animals, ecosystems, and the different layers and zones! I hope you will enjoy my paper because I had a really great time doing this project. It is also very important to learn about the ocean because it provides ecosystems, gives home to many plants and animal, and it covers most of the world.
Earth Would not be Earth without the Ocean
Oceans cover 70% of the world, so the oceans is like a huge water highway because so many boats/ water crafts go on it every day. The main oceans are the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Southern Ocean. The largest ocean on Earth is the Pacific Ocean. It covers around 30% of the Earth’s surface. A cool fact about all of the oceans is that for every gallon of water there is about one cup of sea salt.
The Sun, Moon and Earth's Rotaion all Effect the Ocean
Most of the ocean’s water is very cold because the sun can not reach the deep parts in the water.
The constant motion of the ocean results in currents and waves that may either be warm or cold depending on the weather and temperature of that area.
One of the coldest and deepest points in the ocean is the Mariana Trench. It is higher than Mt. Everest, and is about 36,200 feet deep.
Whenever there is a lot of ocean water on the beach that is when the tide is at its highest point. Whenever there is a lot of sand and low water, that is the tides lowest point. The tides are caused by the Earth’s rotation and the sun and moon’s gravitational pull.
Fun Facts
Layers
There are three different layers in the ocean. The top layer is called the Euphotic zone. It is the area of the ocean where light can warm the water. The next layer is the Disphotic zone. This is a little deeper that the Euphotic zone this zone is too deep for lots of light to reach, so it is very hard to see if there is anything in front of you. The deepest part of the ocean is called the Aphotic zone, or deep sea, It is pitch black in this layer. Therefor, you would not be able see anything without some type of light.
Sun, Photosynthesis, and Ecosystems
The sun and photosynthesis play a big role in the different ecosystems because plants need light to grow. Marine plants and algae provide a lot of the worlds oxygen and also take in huge amounts of carbon dioxide.
There are three different ecosystems in the ocean. The first ecosystem is the freshwater ecosystem. Then, the second one is the terrestrial ecosystem, Finally, the last one is the ocean ecosystems.
Interesting Animal Facts
There are many interesting facts about ocean animals, like that jellyfish have been around longer than dinosaurs, but their appearances change over time. Another weird animal of the sea is the shrimp.
The shrimp does not have a heart in its chest. It is located in their head.
Also, sea sponges have no head, mouth, eyes, feelers, bones, heart, lungs or brain yet they are still alive.
An octopus has three hearts and the color of its blood is blue.
Did you know that an electric eel can power ten light bulbs.
Or that the blue whale has calls louder than any other animal on the planet. Their calls can reach up to 188 decibels!
Another fact is that turtles live on every continent except Antarctica.
