Chemical Reactions

by Mia Miller

1. Synthesis

definition: formation of something complex or coherent by combining simpler things

equation: A + B -> AB

example: H2+O2 -> H2O2

2. Decomposition

definition: separation of a substance into simpler substances

equation: AB -> A+B

example: H2O2 -> H2+O2

3. Single Replacement

definition: a type of oxidation-reduction chemical reaction when an element or ion moves out of one compound and into another

equation: AB + C -> AC + B

example: Zn + CuCl -> Cu + ZnCl

4. Double Replacement

definition: a type of reactions that occurs when the cations and anions switch between two reactants to form new products

equation: AB + CD -> AC + BD

example: NaCl + AgNO -> NaAg + ClNO

5. Combustion

definition: chemical change that produces heat and light

equation: CxHy + O2 -> H2O + CO2

example: CH4 + 2O2 -> CO2 + 2H2O
