Mustangs in the Middle : August 14, 2020
From the desk of Mrs. Boytim, SMS Principal
I am excited to be a part of the Strongsville team and to serve our community in this capacity. My husband and three children and I reside in Strongsville and are proud to live in a distinct district that provides safe and high quality learning for our students.
I began my career at Brunswick High School as a English/Language Arts teacher. I then was given the opportunity to be the Assistant Principal for Brunswick Middle Schools and most recently, Claggett Middle School in Medina.
Despite our current situation, I am eager to begin this school year and work with all of you. Strongsville Middle School has worked many hours this summer to create multiple plans for any situation to ensure the safety and high quality education that all of our students need and deserve. I am proud of the work that has been accomplished and feel confident in the Remote 2.0 schedule and quality instruction we will provide.
The remote 2.0 schedule allows for 2 or more hours of live instruction weekly for each class along with asynchronous learning activities. We are encouraging and expecting interaction between teachers and students. Teachers will also have live team meetings, office hours and small group meetings, where students can meet with a teacher (virtually) and get the extra help they need.
I am eager to start the year with all of you. I know that this year brings new challenges, and this learning method is not traditional, but our staff is determined to provide a quality education and interaction to meet all the needs of each individual student. We are here to help you in any way. Please reach out to our team with any questions, concerns or needs. Thank you for your support and commitment to our school and your student's education. We look forward to seeing all of you soon.

Remote 2.0 Schedule
Remote 2.0 Schedule
Students will be required to attend all of their classes each day based on an alternating block schedule. Students must be present during the designated class times, each day, based on the schedule below. You will see that Block A schedule is represented by Blue and Block B schedule is represented by Green. Please see the calendars below detailing A and B days during Remote 2.0.Students are responsible to participate in asynchronous learning activities (learning that takes place utilizing online resources without live teaching), assignments, and assessments for all classes on “out” days. Students will need to produce course work, check-ins and assessments assigned by each teacher to earn their grade/credit and to earn attendance credits each day/week. Staff may also invite or require students to attend small groups or one to one meets at any time during the school day/week, as long as it does not conflict with a live class time.
Friday Remote 2.0 Schedule
Remote 2.0 Calendar
Block A schedule is represented by Blue and Block B schedule is represented by Green. Red indicates No School. Yellow indicates Fridays, and are currently asynchronous days, however teachers will meet for 1 hour live on Fridays (See Friday Remote Schedule) for team time. Teachers can also utilize these days for instruction, follow-ups, tutoring, parent meetings, intervention etc.

Technology Needs Survey
Please fill out the technology needs survey so that we can assess what the needs of students are in order to ensure students are on track in their lessons.
Atttendance
Teachers are going to take attendance for live instruction, like normal, and this will be recorded in Power School.
Additionally the Asynchronous part of learning will also have an attendance component that is required. Student attendance in the asynchronous learning component will be completion of student work along with check in activities that the teacher will have students fill out.
If a student does not complete the check-ins or assignments they will be marked absent for the days that they don't have live instruction.
If a student is too ill to attend the live classes the should still be called off at the attendance hotline at 440-572-7090 option 2.

Schedule Change Requests
Upon receiving your child's schedule next week, please review it carefully to ensure there are 9 periods and that your child's course selections are correct. If your child's schedule/course selections are incorrect or you would like to request a change, please complete a Schedule Change Request Form to communicate the concern to your school counselor.
Please note:
- Requests to change teams or teachers will not be honored.
- Encore course drops and adds will only be initiated within the prescribed time period of the first three (3) school days of the semester. (Students may not have been enrolled in their top choices for encore course requests, due to enrollment or staffing constraints. School Counselors will work with students to try to accommodate their requests, but schedule changes are not always possible.)
- 7th and 8th grade students who request to take an honors class at this point are still required to complete the summer honors work. (There is no summer work for 6th grade honors classes.)

Welcome back to a new school year! It's hard to believe that it's already August and classes are back in session. I know that this school year is unlike any before and I am confident that our students, staff and families are ready. As a school we have been working on being resilient and this pandemic has shown me first hand how important this really is.
This year I will be the Assistant Principal for all 8th graders and 6th graders whose last names begin with A-L. I look forward to meeting the students and connecting virtually until we can see each other in person. Please reach out to me with any questions or concerns and I will do my best to help.
I am looking forward to starting this new school year and working with all of our SMS Family!

We have been thinking about you since March! I hope that all of you are safe and well.
Our first day of school is coming up quickly, and although it is going to be different at the start of the school year, remember we are all in this together! It is such a strange time in our world, something that we never thought we would ever have to go through. It is amazing to me how quickly everyone in the nation got a mask! It makes me happy that we all want to protect one another.
This year I will be the Assistant Principal for all 7th graders and 6th graders, whose last names begin with M-Z. If there is anything that I can help you with as the year moves forward, please never hesitate to contact me. There is never a "silly" question, just send me a quick email or call, and I'd be happy to answer and explain.
It's important to remember, "Education is not a place, it's where-ever learning is happening." Our teachers and staff have been working hard to find alternative strategies to add to their teaching methods, so that all our students will be successful this year. Our teachers will be teaching whole group, on-line, and often working with small groups of students, on-line, to support their individual needs. Our SMS team is 100% committed to finding the best way to keep our students learning, engaged, and growing.
I am so looking forward to getting back to school and working with our SMS students.
Stay positive...Everything is going to be alright!
