NOTE FROM DR. PRIJATELJ

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

School is just around the corner. Back to school sale advertising is on the TV, on-line, and in the newspaper. Here in the Altoona Area School District, we too are preparing feverishly for the first day of school. This month’s back-to-school newsletter has a lot of information regarding meet the teacher nights, student orientation, sport camps and all the activities scheduled to get everyone ready for the first day of school on August 24th. (Click on the headers within the newsletter for more detailed information.)

Registration: If you have a child who has turned five (5) or will turn five (5) by September 1, 2022 and they are not registered for school, the district student registration is ready to enroll them. There is a list of items/forms necessary on the district website and more information can be found below.

Mansion Park Stadium: The NEW Stadium lights are installed and being tested this week. The Grandstand improvements including the handrails and wider aisles are still being worked on but should be done well before the first home football game.

Employment Opportunities: Below is information about the many employment opportunities all across the district including details on the District job fair, Thursday, August 4th from 2-6pm inside the AAHS lobby.

Fall Sports: The official first day of fall sports practice camp is August 15th. More information and team schedules are available below and on the athletics page of the district website.

As I said earlier, we are feverishly preparing for your return. Enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to seeing you on August 24th.

Sincerely,

Dr. "P"

The 2022-23 school year will bring some changes to the cafeteria program. Funding for pandemic related free meals is no longer available; therefore, families not approved for Free or Reduced meals will be charged $1.10 for breakfast and $2.15 for lunch.

Visit the District website or watch your mail box or in the coming weeks for a Free and Reduced Price School Meal Application. Almost 70% of the students in the Altoona Area School District qualify for free or reduced priced meals. Complete your application and return it to the cafeteria office or your students school building.

Transportation letters will be mailed to homes the week of August 15th. All students residing outside the 1 ½ mile walk zone should receive a letter detailing their vehicle number, bus stop location and estimated times for pick up and drop off. Students are encouraged to be at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to the assigned time to allow some flexibility for traffic and other potential travel concerns.

The school counselors are hoping everyone is having an enjoyable summer. We are continuing to prepare for the 2022-2023 school year. The school counselors have been reviewing schedules, final grades and summer school grades to make sure the start of the year is as smooth as possible. When the school year begins, we encourage all parents and guardians to log into Skyward periodically to keep up to date with the grades and attendance of your student.

The summer is an excellent time for students to think about what they may like to do after graduating high school. If students want some assistance in what path they would like to choose after high school the information found here may help.

If students are looking for a job, Career Link can assist. Please contact them by clicking here or call 814-940-6200.

Hope you are having a great summer!

It is hard to believe that August is upon us and it is time for Back to School! We hope that everyone has had a safe, healthy, and happy summer! Our schools have been filled with excitement surrounding summer programming that included lots of learning and so much fun! As we begin to think about the return to school, it is important to remember that children do best when on a schedule that promotes healthy habits like plenty of sleep, a balanced diet, limited screen time, and positive interactions in the home. Creating an environment that supports your child in achieving these goals can be instrumental to their success! Also, don’t forget to take time to read each night. Not only is this a time that families can bond, but this time is also a time that can set a positive example for children to gain a love of literacy.

Student assignment information should arrive at your homes the week of August 8th. Opening day information will be included for parents regarding arrival/dismissal, breakfast/lunch, important information to prepare for the start of the year, etc.

All transportation information will be mailed directly from the AASD Transportation Department. If you do not receive this information, please reach out to your school office for more information.

The AASD Elementary Program is looking forward to hosting Parent and Family Engagement events each month throughout the school year! Look for the save the date to come home from your child’s school for these special events. They are all filled with learning for families, fun for your child, and prizes! Parent and Family Engagement events are a great way to become involved in the school community!

I encourage all families to attend the upcoming Meet the Teacher nights for the 2022-2023 school year! You’ll have the opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, hear what your child will be learning this year, and learn about the exciting opportunities that will be available for your child. Parent and family engagement is vital to the success of each child! We need your help to best assist your child. Join us to learn more about how you can best support your child this school year!

2022-23 Device Insurance

We all know that accidents happen - often through no fault of our own. That is why in 2016, the AASD Director of Technology enrolled the District in the One2One Risk Solutions program. The program offers parents/guardians the opportunity to purchase insurance, at a reasonable rate, for their student’s take-home technology device. Since that first year the cost for device insurance has been $25 and will remain $25 for the 2022-23 school year.

The insurance covers accidental damage of the device for up to 3 incidents throughout the school year. For example, if a student with insurance accidentally drops the device, cracking

the screen, the cost of repair will be $0 for the student for this 1st incident. If later the student spills a drink on the device, rendering it unusable, the cost to the student for this 2nd incident is $25. The cost for a 3rd incident is $50. If a student has insurance, and the device is lost or stolen, the cost is $100. The $25 insurance fee is a fraction of the possible student fine to repair/replace a device.

How do you sign up? Information on One2One Risk Solutions will be provided by the school principals when the registration window is opened in early-mid September. The handout gives easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions for the parent/guardian to follow on the One2One website. The device can be registered with the student’s ID and specific device tag number. If a credit card is not available, a debit card can be purchased through the building principal for $25.

Although the insurance is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged to avoid a potential student fine due to accidental damage or loss during the school year.

AASD has an opening for a City of Altoona Master/Journeyman Plumber.

We are also looking to hire substitute custodians. First, second, and third shifts available starting at $12 per hour with possibility of advancement when regular positions arise. Strong consideration is given to substitute employees demonstrating superior work ethic.

The buildings & grounds department has been busy preparing for the upcoming school year. The new football/soccer/track field lights are up at Mansion Park. The Junior High had landscaping refreshed and the gym floors refinished. Trees were planted at Logan and Pleasant Valley Elementary schools to replace those that were damaged by weather or disease. Replacement windows and doors are underway at Juniata Elementary.
