AVID Focus
Think that planner, agenda book, assignment notebook, or calendar is just for planning? It is so much more! The planner is one part of AVID Organization. It is a way for students to keep track of homework, upcoming deadlines, reflections on the day, current learning, notes, lists, and more. In primary grades, K-2, students use folders. Inside, you might find a calendar marking their "color" for each day. This can serve as a reflection and a communication tool. It can also be used for goal setting.
At home: Have a conversation with your child about what color they were on. How did they get to that color? What kinds of behaviors or actions would lead to a student moving up or down on a clip chart. Set a goal for improvement or to remain consistent.
In intermediate grades, the assignment notebook is typically found inside the binder. There, you'll find homework assignments and due dates. It could also be used for reflection on learning. For example, a student could write the "Learning Target" for the day's lesson in the subject area. So, if there is no homework, you might see "Identify main characters" listed in the reading section.
At home: Ask your child about the learning targets. They might be written as "I Can" statements. Be sure to discuss what they are learning, not just what homework they have.
