Safety Training
Paonia K-8 will continue to utilize A.L.I.C.E. training for our school safety training.
During this school year, we will be completing 4 separate A.L.I.C.E. trainings. These trainings are informational sessions focused on educating students of the different processes of Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. The teachers will be educating students of each of the elements of A.L.I.C.E. During second semester, we will be completing one full A.L.I.C.E. drill. More details and explanations will be provided in at that time.
September 29: A.L.I.C.E. overview with a focus on Alert and Inform. Teachers will be providing age-appropriate instruction on an overview of A.L.I.C.E. along with an explanation of how to alert and inform when danger may exist.
November 18: A.L.I.C.E. overview with a focus on Lockdown/Counter. Teachers will be providing age-appropriate instruction on an overview of A.L.I.C.E. along with an explanation of how to counter when danger exists.
January 30: A.L.I.C.E. overview with a focus on Evacuate. Teachers will be providing age-appropriate instruction on an overview of A.L.I.C.E. along with an explanation of how to evacuate when danger exists. We will then practice evacuating the building in a similar manner to our fire drills. For a full evacuation, our designated meeting location is the Nature Trail. We will fully evacuate to this location during this training.
March 30: A.L.I.C.E. overview with a focus on a full drill. Teachers will be providing age-appropriate instruction on an overview of A.L.I.C.E. along with an explanation of how to proceed with Lockdown or Evacuate when danger exists. During this practice, students will practice barricading the classroom door in order to prevent classroom entrance or evacuate the building to the Nature Trail. Classroom doors will then only be opened with a key from a school administrator.

Awesome Kids (Kindergarten - 5th Grade)
The district will be recognizing AWESOME Kids every month. These students will receive a certificate, a leadership/character medal, and their picture in the DCI.
DCSD’s Awesome Kids show strong leadership and positive character traits. (AWESOME = appreciative, willing, enthusiastic, positive self-esteem, open-hearted, mindful, eager to learn.)
This is different than our Exceptional Eagles, which are recognized for SOARING = Safety, Order, Achievement, Respect, Individuality, Neighborly, Growth.
PK8 kids are Awesome!

Girls on the Run is Coming to Paonia K8 This Spring!!
All girls in 3rd through 6th grade are invited to come join us as we have fun learning and growing together.
Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an after-school program that uses the power of running to prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Each session is led by trained, volunteer coaches who guide and mentor girls through a fun and uplifting curriculum. Coaches teach specific life lessons such as dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community. Along the way, the girls train together to complete an end-of-season celebratory 5K (3.1 mile) event.
In the end, girls leave with a stronger sense of identity, a greater acceptance of themselves, a healthier body image, and an understanding of what it means to be a part of a team and a community. Most importantly, Girls on the Run is FUN! 😊
