Principal's Letter...
Dear Thornhill Families,
I hope you all have been enjoying the rain. This week has flown by with our Monday holiday for Martin Luther King. I would like to remind all of you that there is no school on Friday, Jan. 27. Our teachers are at professional development that day.
February is Black History Month. Our students will be learning about famous African-Americans and the wonderful rich history of our nation.
February 3 is our Lunar New Year Parade at 1 p.m. See you there.
In an effort to continue to welcome and connect with our new families, I would like to invite you to Coffee with the Principal & PFC Co-Presidents, on February 3 at 8:25 a.m. in the lunch area behind the school. This is an opportunity for parents to connect with us and other parents. All parents are welcome to attend. This is one way for us to support each other and build community so I hope to see you there.
Have an awesome weekend and stay dry.
Best,
Mr. Daubenspeck
Benefit Auction--Save The Date!
A Spring Evening in a Blue Garden!
Thornhill recently received a “National Blue Ribbon” award as a sign of our school's outstanding performance. This was a great achievement and is something all of us--parents, student and staff can be proud of.
But even great schools like Thornhill need their whole community to remain great. And with budget constraints in the Oakland Unified School District, many programs that were once basic to every child’s education are in danger of losing support.
The Parent Faculty Club is raising money to maintain or supplement essential programs like music, art, computers, and physical education. To guarantee this in the future, we will have our 31st Annual Benefit Auction at Oakland’s Ascension Cathedral Event Center on March 11, 2017 from 6-11 p.m. Parking is available.
Already got your tickets? No?
Hurry before our Early Bird Special ends on January 31st.
Tickets are on Sale now for only $ 99 per couple.

Library News
Newberry Film(strip) Festival
January is an exciting month for young booklovers. The American Library Association's 2017 Youth Media Award-winning authors are announced on Monday. The students and I looked at titles from potential winners throughout the month, and we have some clear favorites. We can’t wait to find out who the winning authors will be!
Last week, we started our Newberry Filmstrip Festival. The library holds some classic Newberry and Caldecott filmstrips and I’ve been sharing them with the students. Not only do we enjoy the stories on screen, but the filmstrips also provide some excellent points of discussion; from story elements and historical context, to the craft of writing and what makes a story distinguished. Our Newberry Filmstrip Festival includes, The Family Under the Bridge, by Natalie Savage Carlson; Dear Mr. Henshaw, by Beverly Cleary; and The Hundred Dresses, by Eleanor Estes.
Wishlist
Check out the Amazon Wishlist to see which books the library would love to add to the collection. Feel free to support our local bookstores by making your purchases there. As always, thank you for supporting the library!
Happy Holidays,

Mural Update
Thank You Thornhill friends and families!!
Thanks to your help, we hit our goal for the Thornhill mural!!!
What to look for next:
- The end of the rainy season - we can’t wait to get started! Once the rainy season ends (targeting April) we will begin the next phase - painting!!
- Sign Up Genius - if you would like to help the project further, watch for the Sign Up Genius (coming soon!) for volunteer helpers (kids and parents!).
- Specific functions will be defined as we get closer to execution time in April. In March, interested volunteers will be able to be able to sign up for specific jobs and tasks.
Many parents have already donated their talents, time and the necessary equipment to help us make this happen so, thank you again for your love and support!!
We are so excited to bring this mural to life and to add to the rich environment for our kids that inspires learning and play!
Finally, since some things cannot be said enough:
THANK YOU to all of the Thornhill families and friends of Thornhill that have helped us get so far with this exciting school project!!
