March 2018
From the Desk of Dr. Mazaleski
Our TuES staff has just spent many days reviewing student data and progress. Every teacher spends time discussing each student in their class with administration and school specialists. Our motto for those days is "Every Class, Every Child". Progress monitoring is ongoing for all students as needed, but the formal Kid Talk Meetings occur school-wide three times a year. This is a wonderful process that brings various professionals together to benefit students. Please feel free to contact your child's teacher if you have any questions about your student's progress.
Another important topic reviewed this month is school safety. The staff at TuES understands that we are responsible for protecting the most valuable thing in your life... your children. We take that responsibility very seriously. Staff have access to safety protocol for specific situations and are asked to review them regularly. This month we have reviewed our safety procedures as a school and would like to remind families of some of them.
- Please be prepared to state your name, your child's name , teacher, grade and the purpose for your visit when you come to school.
- Please be prepared to show an ID at our front office.
- Parents will need to have an appointment or be expected by the teacher before being sent to classrooms.
- While lunch is a great time to visit with your student, we ask that visits end after lunch in the cafeteria.
- If you need to have someone other than you pick up your student, please inform the office prior to the pick up.
- If parents are invited to a class or school-wide event, please be prepared for the possibility of a line to enter.
Thank you all for understanding that safety can, at times, seem inconvenient, but the security of students is everyone's final goal.
Happy March!
Dr. Kimberly Mazaleski

Timberwolf Times Staff Writers
Enjoy the work of our student writers!
I interviewed Mrs. Zimmerman about how the Hobby Lobby came to be. Mrs Zimmerman started the Hobby Lobby because of her love of collections. She put her collections in the Hobby Lobby to start it off, with snowmen and many other objects she collects. Many people at TuES wanted their very own collections displayed in the Hobby Lobby. Students are welcome to ask Mrs. Zimmerman if they can have a place in the Hobby Lobby. All they have to do is fill out a sheet, which asks questions like What do you collect? And Why do you collect it? Anyone can ask for that slip of paper and display their collections, even the staff! Mrs. Zimmerman loves the Hobby Lobby because it lets everyone at TuES share what members of the pack like to collect.
The Young Author's Competition - Yara D
The annual Young Authors’ competition was held once again this year with entries being submitted by Dec 15th. The competition is open to students in grades 2-12.Students can submit two types of writing. There are two winners in each grade. One is in the short story category and the other is poetry.
Any student can enter in grades 2,3,4 and 5 grade at the elementary level. Why is it being held? The competition is held to promote the fun in writing and for students to show the writer in themselves. The Frederick County Reading Council sponsors this event. Many people may know this but for the people who don't know, participants have to write a short story or a poem. The poem has to be 25-150 words long and the short story is to be 200-300 words long. In the story and the poem there should be no violence or anything inappropriate.
Who picks the winners? Some of the teachers at Tuscarora ES picked the winners at the school level. The winners’ entries will be sent to the county level and the winners from the county competition will be sent on to compete at the state level. The teachers that judged this year’s entries were Ms.Fogle, Ms.Slivey, Mrs Tressler, Mr. McKenzie and Ms Thompson.
What is the prize? Winners at the school level get a certificate and their work will be published in the Timberwolf Times. The prize at the county level will be awarded at a special ceremony at the Board of Education room on East Street in March. The prizes at the state level have not been announced yet. However, anyone from Frederick County that wins at the state level gets to meet with our superintendent, Dr. Alban and receive specific recognition from her in person. This year there were many entries at Tuscarora ES. At the county level, there were entries from 8 elementary schools. Some schools sent one entry, some schools sent several entries in each category. Stay tuned to learn if any writers from our school won at the county level. I sure hope so!
Watching “The Polar Express” -An Interview with a Kindergartner - Jasiri B
Watching The Polar Express on the day before winter break, is a long standing tradition at Tuscarora Elementary. Today I interviewed a student in Mrs. Bower’s kindergarten class to find out how the newest students in the school like this tradition. I decided to interview her after she watched the movie. I asked her a number of questions.
Me: On a scale of 1 to 1 trillion, how good was the movie?
K: One trillion
Me: What was the best part?
K: I loved once he found the bell.
Me: What was the worst part in the movie?
K: I think the worst part is when he was the ticket.
Me: What did you think was going to happen at the end?
K: I thought the boy would not end up with the bell.
Me: Did you like the ending? Why?
She replied with a simple pause, Yes, because the boy ended up with the bell and the ending was happy.
Me: If you could be in the movie, what part would you like and why?
K: I want to be a elf because they are always happy.
My seventh and final question was What did your class do that made this movie special?
K: My classmates were quiet throughout the movie. Everyone was focused on the story.
This student loved being a part of our tradition and doing all of the activities in class related to the movie. Comparing the movie to the book was a cool thing to do. It is the first time she ever did that.

Art
In Art, we are beginning to get our Art show projects together or created in the next couple of months. Grades 3-5 are doing different types of perspective from exploding shapes to silhouettes and still life to studying different artists. K-2 will be creating landscapes, seascapes, or cityscapes focusing on foreground, middleground, and background. Kindergarten will also be doing a color mixing activity learning about what yellow and blue make! 5th grade will be keeping their artwork at school for a final portfolio assessment and grade at the end of the school year. The Youth Art Show (YAM) will be during the month of March at the Delaplaine. We will have 6 students who were selected to have their Art displayed there. Congratulations to Sophia Carliss (5th Grade), George King (5th Grade), Vanuklian Niuk (5th Grade), Anna Ohlheiser (5th Grade), Olivia Edwards (4th Grade), and Bhavna Vasanthan (3rd Grade). Stay tuned for more information on our 2nd annual school-wide Art show in May!
Music
The month of March is off to a great start in music class. Primary grades (K,1,2) are continuing to learn new songs, explore instrument sounds and families, and discover an array of various musical concepts such as tone color! Intermediate grades (3,4,5) are exploring the concept of tone color. Various instrument families and the individual instruments in those families all have their own special voices. Identifying these instruments by sight, sound, and method of producing sound are important factors when exploring the concept of tone color. 3rd grade students will soon be able to try some of these instruments as well, preparing some to make a decision as to which instrument they may want to play in 4th and 5th grade band. Tone Color is the unique sound a voice or instrument produces. Chorus is off to a great start as well! We are preparing for 3 upcoming performances this spring. Chorus begins at 8 am each Monday morning for 4th and 5th grade students that are already registered.
