TRICK OR TREAT SO OTHERS CAN EAT
Every year, all JCPRD programs conduct a food drive in order to gather non-perishable items to donate to local food pantries. We will be decorating paper bags and delivering them around nearby neighborhoods (on foot) on Thursday, October 20th. Attached to each paper bag will be instructions for donating. If someone wishes to donate, they will be instructed to place the paper bag full of non-perishables on their doorstep on Tuesday, October 25th, and we will journey out, once again, that afternoon to pick up all of these donations. This way the kids will not be required to knock on doors of people they may not know. You will be given the opportunity to take a bag home and fill it if you wish!
*** We will need wagons on Oct 25th when we are picking up full bags, so if you have one you would be willing to loan us for the day, it would be greatly appreciated!***
I will have permission forms out the week we will be venturing out for you to sign, allowing your child to participate, so please be sure to sign! We will be heading out around 4:15 and returning at approximately 5:00 on both Oct 20th and Oct 25th. We will carry the site cell phone with us, so if you intend on picking up after 4:15 and prior to 5:00 you can give us a call and we can let you know our location.
All about SEL
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
SEL programming is based on the understanding that the best learning emerges in the context of supportive relationships that make learning challenging, engaging, and meaningful! Without a strong foundation of SEL, other skills may be compromised.
COURAGE AND BRAVERY
The words we will be focusing and expanding on this month are "courage" and "bravery". Please have conversations with your kiddos regarding what these words mean to them, or about what they've learned regarding these words, as we will be doing a few activities based upon them!
A few quotes about courage:
"Kind people are brave people. Brave is not a feeling that you should wait for. It is a decision. It is a decision.... that compassion is more important than fear, than fitting in, than following the crowd" - Glennon Doyle Melton
"Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow." - Mary Anne Radmacher
"Courage isn't only for superheroes. It's not about heroism as it is more about becoming our best selves: to be connected, contributing members of our community. Sometimes that may mean a heroic rescue or a daring act. Most of the time, courage is quieter. Courage is welcoming a new neighbor, standing up for a classmate who is being bullied, doing the right thing. Courage is a heart word-to speak one's mind by telling all one's heart." - anonymous

Daily Schedule (tentative)
· Check-In: 3:25-3:35 All students will meet on the couches outside of the office directly after school. If you know your child(ren) will not be in OST please call us at 913.893.9601 or email me at janni.meierhoff@jocogov.org. If a student has not checked in with us, we will contact the office and then you if we haven't heard from you first.
· Snack: 3:35-3:55 We are very excited to report that we have taken the Commit to Health Pledge! In doing so you can expect to see our out of school time participants engaging in more physical activity, learning about good nutrition, and eating healthier snacks while in attendance at JCPRD. Commit to Health is an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association and The Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Our staff have worked hard to develop a new food service menu that features items that are nutrient dense, low in fat, sugar, and sodium, as well as more fresh fruits and vegetables. Please support our efforts to help students develop healthy eating habits by encouraging them to be open to trying new foods and by reinforcing the benefits of nutritious diet. Healthy snacks and meals improve cognitive function, increase energy, and help children grow strong muscles and bones!
· Homework/Reading time: 3:55-4:15 After snack time your child(ren) will have the opportunity to work on homework, choose to read, or color/draw. We encourage kids to work on their homework but do not force them. We do expect them to work QUIETLY during this time.
· Activities: 4:15-5:00 We will provide a variety of activities for kids to choose from during this time, including: science experiments, cooking club, health, fitness, environmental education, art, challenges, and team/leadership building activities.
· Outside/Gym Time: 5:00-5:45 We believe it is essential for minds and bodies to have mental health breaks and join in on fitness breaks. Weather permitting we will go outside. Please remember to have your child(ren) layer up and bring a jacket with their name labeled inside it. We will have structured activities for them to do during this time as well as free play.
· Free Play in the classroom: 5:45-6:00 Your child(ren) will be able to have free play as we are cleaning up from the days activities.
· Check-Out: When you come to pick up your child(ren) please remember to WALK DOWN and SIGN THEM OUT in the basement (use door #21). There is a late charge of a $1 per minute after 6:00pm
- Due to our closed-door policy, you will be required to call the site phone # upon arrival and we will come and let you in. This is for the safety of your child/children. If we are outside, there will be a sign on door #21 stating so and you may pick your child up from the playground after signing them out!
Sign in/out Policy
All children must be signed in and out, daily, with parent initials and time. This is a Kansas State Health Department regulation. Staff will follow up, if parents do not sign their children out, with a phone call to verify pick-up. Children are not allowed to sign themselves in/out without a parent.
***Be sure to have your ID on you for verification when signing out***
JCPRD's CODE of CONDUCT
NO CARE ON SNOW DAYS!!!!!
JCPRD has pledged to the COMMIT TO HEALTH campaign!!!
We know that kids who eat healthier and move more perform better in school. It's not just because teachers and administrators tell us so. Research shows that healthy kids get better grades, attend school more often and behave better in class.
Experts recommend that kids get 60 minutes of physical activity every day. These minutes can come before, during, or after school as long as kids are staying active and having fun!
Park and recreation agencies are the health and wellness leaders in their communities. Having a safe place to go after school, being active and eating healthy are vital services park and recreation agencies provide. That's why NRPA created Commit to Health—a campaign that supports the implementation and evaluation of Healthy Eating, Physical Activity (HEPA) standards in park and recreation sites across the country.
Please help us encourage your children to live healthy lifestyles by eating healthy, and getting lots of physical activity!
