Monday Minutes

April 30, 2018

Every school year, I look forward to spring. Once the weather begins to warm up and the grass starts to turn green, I grab my gardening tools and head outside to get to work. I tackle the big jobs first, trimming the shrubs and clearing out the weeds and debris from the flower beds. I really have to put some muscle into this! Next I move on to the more delicate tasks of uncovering the new plant growth and planting new flowers and herbs. Finally, I lay mulch and water.

I think teaching is a lot like gardening. We have many big jobs that we have to tackle every day like planning for instruction to meet the needs of every student and communicating with parents and staff. We also have delicate moments every day - the time we take to reflect on our instruction and adjust what we are doing to help a student "get it", the conversation we have with a student that gives us a glimpse into their personal life, the joy that we experience when we see student success. Now, you may be wondering about the mulch. In my garden, mulch serves two main purposes - to keep the weeds from growing and to keep the water in so that the plants can grow. Your classroom routines and procedures are your mulch. Those routines and procedures keep the weeds from growing in your classroom so that you can get right to the business of learning. Finally, the water. The love and caring that your students feel from you is their water. It is absolutely vital to their success.

After I've cleaned up my flowerbeds and planted new plants, I head out there every day to look for new surprises - a rose that has bloomed or a butterfly that hovers on the sage. Take time to marvel at the garden that you've been tending all year. Something might surprise you too!
