Girls on the Run
At Girls on the Run, the finish line is just the beginning.
We invite you to come be an inspiration to girls in the 3rd-8th grade.
Our program uses a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running in order to build confidence and teach valuable life skills. The 12-week after-school program meets twice per week and the 24 lessons are led by adult trained volunteers who inspire girls to be strong, contented and self-confident individuals. Girls on the Run of the High Country offers programming in Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Wilkes and Avery counties.

Clio Talks-History, Social Studies Ed Majors (from Dr. Rwany Sibaja)
So, what are Clio Talks?
These “pre-professional” seminars, hosted by the Center for History Education, are 1-hour sessions offered three times per semester and geared towards all History and Education majors interested in the teaching and learning of history and social studies. Each session is part-informational and part-Q&A. Guest speakers will discuss a variety of topics of interest to future history educators, and then field questions from the audience. Clio Talks is also an opportunity for our 200 or so History, Social Studies Education majors to get together, know each other, and share insight from your experiences at App State. This will count as a regular AppEd seminar after providing a reflective paragraph how this can be used in your classroom.
Please mark your calendar for Wednesday Sept 7. Because this is our first Clio Talks we are offering TWO sessions that day at 1pm and 4pm. Both sessions will be held in Plemmons Student Union, Room 201B.
For this first session, we will use a “speed dating”-style roundtable where upperclass students can answer questions and offer advice on a series of topics (which we will provide that day). The other major goal of this session is to welcome our Freshmen class and new transfer students.
So…we are asking some Seniors to make themselves available to answer questions for Sophomores and Juniors, and some Sophomores and Juniors available to answer questions from new App State students. It should be a lot of fun!
Mark your calendars for our second Clio Talks, which will be held on October 5th at 4pm in Anne Belk 240. Our guest speakers - Dr. Karl Campbell (ASU - History), Jamie Wilson (Watauga HS - Social Studies), and Jenny Risk (Ashe HS - Social Studies) - will discuss how to address politics in the history classroom in a presidential election year. THIS WILL COUNT as an AppEd Seminar!
