Medicine

Achievement- The asu would use spices, plant extracts, and resins as antiseptics and antibiotics. The Sumerians would prescribes these as drugs.


This was important in Mesopotamia because it increased their knowledge of what in nature can help with sickness, illness and decease.


This is important today because many of medicines we use now come from natural substances such as plants.

Math

Achievement- Sumerians used, for example, the number 3 to count numerous things. They did use a different symbol for each object but this method was more effective.


This was important in Mesopotamia because it made math much less complicated and easier to understand for them.


This is important today because all of our mathematics systems are based off of the basic principles that the Sumerians had put in place.

Astrology

Achievement- Calculated the months and years and configured it not according to the lunar cycle and figured in when leap years should occur rather than the king making the decision.



This was important in Mesopotamia because the Sumerians could know what day, month, and year it was. It made things less complicated in the fact that they were all on the same time frame.


This is important today because the calendar is one thing that is mostly the same everywhere and is used universally for the same purpose.

Inventions

Achievement- They invented the first wheel in which they attached to chariots to get places quickly.


This was important in Mesopotamia because it increased their efficiency on getting items to and from places.


This is important today because the shipping and transportation of imports, exports, etc. would be very in efficient.

Recreation

Achievement- Music was a big part of the culture. It was in festivals where male and females sang along with instrumental accompaniment.



This was important in Mesopotamia because music was a way to celebrate and tell stories through their vocal cords.


This is important today because Music is an enormous part of at least the American culture. Everyone enjoys listening and playing music. We see it as a way to express ourselves.
