Emoji Pictionary
Let's begin with this fun game of Emoji Pictionary! Each line on the picture above uses an emoji combination to "spell out" the name of a children's book. For example, number 1 is Green Eggs and Ham. Now let your student try!
Design a Book Cover
Do Daily "DEAR" Time
“DEAR” stands for “Drop Everything And Read!” So fun, right?! Give students time during the day to just stop where they are, grab any book they want, and read! Make it extra fun by allowing students to sit and read ANYWHERE!

This year, the Lunar New Year begins on February 1, 2022. Instead of being based on the solar calendar, the lunar new year is based on the cycles of the moon.
- 28 Children’s Books to Celebrate Lunar New Year.
- Which animal of the Chinese zodiac are you like?
- If you live in China, you might celebrate by cleaning house, eating dumplings, exchanging red envelopes, or another of these ways. Here is a short video overview of Chinese New Year customs (the narrator mispronounces nian though!)
- Take a look at these ways to celebrate the lunar new year, including calligraphy, scroll painting and games.
- In Vietnam, lunar new year is called Tet. It is an important time to spend with family and eat special foods like chung cake, dried fruits and seeds and pickled onions. Parties full of traditional dishes are the main Tet activity. From the last day of the year, family members unite to enjoy “Tất Niên” Meal (the last meal of a Lunar New Year) to share experiences gained through the year. The parties are also time to review family traditions, show respect to elders and strengthen relationships.
- In Korea, lunar new year is called Seollal. It is a three day long celebration involving eating together, honoring ancestors and elders, and playing games. Here are some fun crafts to do to celebrate lunar new year and learn about Korean culture.
- Lunar new year is not a national holiday in Japan, but it is still celebrated in many ways including cleaning house to get rid of bad luck, eating and giving rice cakes and red envelopes of money given as gifts.

CAASPP testing is the statewide assessment given to all public school students. Subjects assessed are Math and ELA to students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 and Science in grades 5, 8 and once in high school.
We also offered a parent university session on the tools and supports available, with a live walk-through of the practice portal. If you have any questions about these supports you can reach out to your HST or testing@cabrillopointacademy.org

Enrichment
In an effort to help keep Homeschool Hub order turnaround times as low as possible for our families, our school will begin using a Lakeshore eProcurement (punchout) account on January 24, 2022. This will extend a Cabrillo Point Academy school account to each of our students, which can only be accessed through the Hub. Here's how it will work:
You will need to select or enter your shipping address when you begin creating your orders
The Hub will redirect you to Lakeshore's site
You can then place requested items in a cart and checkout
Lakeshore's site will redirect you back to the Hub, and orders will be added to your student's Pending Approval folder
Your HST will need to review and approve any orders for their students
There is no guarantee that requested items will be approved by the school
Items can be deleted, but not added to orders
Unlike Amazon, there is no limit to the number of items that can be requested per order

Homeschooling Advice
How to Find Interesting Writing Prompts to Engage Your Kids
Whether you have been homeschooling for years or are just getting started, there will come times when you simply need a little help. Sometimes that means you buy the big boxed curriculum for the year or hire out your least favorite subject. Sometimes though, you just need a little help with ideas.
When it comes to helping your child find their writer’s voice, the best way to teach them is with free-flowing thoughts about subjects they are interested in. However, if you’ve ever actually taught a kid to write, you most often get a look of complete fear or bewilderment. This is where writing prompts come in handy. They not only give you ideas for topics, but they help your kids by inspiring creativity. Here are some tips for finding interesting writing prompts to engage your kids.

Hi, I am a Mother of 4 sons, and grandma of 3 little ones. I learned about homeschooling about 5 years ago and I loved the whole concept. I homeschooled my youngest son and he loved it! I wish I had known this way of teaching when my other sons were little. I love helping families to thrive, and be successful! I am here to help you in any way I can.
