What's Buzzing at the Heights
Week 8: September 20-24, 2021
Message from the Principal
Dear Hornet Families,
We had a GREAT week with our scholars as we completed 34 days in session. I appreciate how many of our scholars are reading books! Reading is a foundational skill scholars will use across all other content areas. Read daily with your child for 20 minutes. It will make a huge difference.
Last week, I had to suspend recess from our scholars in 5th grade due to discipline issues that arose. Our scholars must follow the school rules. "Keep hands, feet and objects to self." Please review this with all children. We also found that many children are name calling. I ask that our scholars continue to be the best version of themselves.
I am hopeful that all scholars will continue to make good choices and be kind to one another. We are a family at Horizon Heights and need to treat each other well. I do ask for your support in helping me review this with our children.
We are down to 10 days before we release for Fall Intersession. Make it count and be at school every day that you are healthy! We have lots of great activities planned and look forward to ending the 9 weeks on Friday, October 1.
Fall Intersession Learning Camp.
As we get ready for Fall Intersession, we will be hosting a Fall Learning Camp for all scholars in need of supports in math and reading. We will break on October 1. We will host Fall Learning Camp on Monday, October 4 through Friday, October 8 from 8:00 AM till 12 noon. Take advantage of this support if you are invited. It means teachers will offer hands-on learning and small group support. We hope you will join us!
Book Fair Update.
Thanks to all of the families that participated in our Fall Book Fair. Ms. Ortega was amazed that we had over $18,000 in sales. All of the portion for Horizon Heights ES will be used for new books! Awesome work everyone!
Virtual Community Meeting for Boundary Changes.
We will host a Virtual Community Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 5 PM. Please contact Ms. Aurora Guerrero, our Parent Liaison and she will forward the meeting link. You can call the office at 937-7400 or email her at: agutie24@sisd.net.
Instruction begins promptly at 7:30 AM. The TARDY bell is at 7:30 AM. We thank you for making every effort to be on time daily!
Attendance.
Now that we have been in school for 34 days, we are making contact with families that have 5 or more absences. I urge you to continue to send in doctor's notes. When we have a doctor's note, we are able to code the absence as excused. It is vital that scholars do not miss more than 17 days in a school year. At absence 18, scholars are in Loss of Credit. They will have to attend additional tutoring to regain credit to be promoted to the next grade. I will explain more as we meet this week.
Mask Mandate.
Starting on Monday, August 30, all scholars and staff members must wear a mask. We will provide disposable masks at the front door on a daily basis. Thank you for working with us to honor the mask mandate. We can do this together!
SEL Lessons.
Our counselors, Ms. Salazar and Ms. Valdez have prepared Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons for our scholars and teachers. This week our character word will focus on good citizenship. Our scholars’ social emotional learning topic is on being kind to others. Scholars will engage in lessons about the importance of showing kindness to others everyday and the benefits being kind brings for themselves.
Breakfast in the Classroom.
Our district will provide breakfast in the classroom for ALL scholars. Breakfast in the Classroom, BIC, will be served daily from 7:15 AM to 7:30 AM. Please be on time to take advantage of the most important meal of the day.
Meal Applications.
Please complete the meal application this week. If you do not qualify, it will take you less than 5 minutes. Be sure to enter ALL of your children and their respective schools. https://www.myschoolapps.com/Application
We still need 85 families to please COMPLETE the survey as soon as possible. It will help us gain funding for next school year. Thanks in advance!
Change of Clothes.
Please send a change of clothing for scholars in PK, Kinder and 1st graders. In a ziplock bag, place a shirt, short, undergarment and socks. We will when the children have an accident. You will be notified. Please check your child's backpack daily.
Picking Up Students.
Due to traffic, we will not be able to release students after 2 PM. If you have a doctor's appointment, please pick them up before 2 PM so that you can make your appointment.
Devices.
We are working to get devices for students without one. Thank you for your continued patience. Please be sure to complete the SISD Device Agreement Eform found on Tyler 360. If you have not completed this form, your child will continue to wait for a device. In order for the district to allocate a device for your child, this form must be completed. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Ortega, 937-7414
Safety.
The building will be cleaned throughout the day in high traffic areas to ensure safety. We will have hand sanitizing stations at all classrooms, restrooms, cafeteria and playground. If you wish for your child to wear a mask, please send them with a mask that fits them comfortably. If you requested a shield for your child's desk, they will have access to a shield. We will all monitor and collaborate to keep our team and families safe!
If at any time you have a concern or question, do not hesitate to email us or call us. We are here to help and ensure we all collaborate together.
Thank you for your continued support! We are blessed with an amazing learning community! Together, we are better!
Respectfully,
Jenifer Hansen
