First Grade News

What we are learning...
- Math - We will be working on 10 more and 10 less of a number.
- Reading - Students will be reviewing text features and different story structures.
- Writing - We will be learning about the writing process.
- Fundations - We will be working on decoding words with blends.
- Science/Social Studies - The students will learn that the natural world includes the air around us and objects in the sky. Students will identify characteristics of the seasons of the year and day and night. They will also record weather information, including relative temperature such as hot or cold, clear or cloudy, calm or windy, and rainy or icy.
Mrs. Park's students know how to run Calendar Time on their own!
The 100th Day of School is on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4th! Family Project Details below:
Please help your child create a poster with 100 items at home. These may be on poster boards, copy paper -- anything. These will be due on WEDNESDAY, February 1st! (The day BEFORE the 100th day of school.)
We will be displaying these in the 1st grade hall and classrooms. If you need any ideas or have any questions, please ask your child’s teacher.

Author Bridget Heos Visits Dove
Bridget Heos is coming to Dove! She will visit with our PreK-3rd grade students on January 24th! We will get to hear how Mustache Baby went from an idea to a published book as well as what it is like to be an author.
Valentine's Day Parties
Kids Valentine's Day Party
The Valentines Party will be on 2/14 during Specials in the gym from 9:20-10:05. There will have Valentines stations with snacks and activities for the students! Volunteer Sign-Up from the PTA coming soon.
Card Exchange
Students are welcome to bring valentines for the class! Please address valentines as "My Friend" (To: My Friend), to make it easier for the students to pass out. We will make Valentine Bags in class. Please do not send any homemade Valentine shoe boxes (for, we will not have the space.) Thanks!
Please have your child bring headphones and charge their iPads every night!
Also - Please send headphones with your student sometime this week (no earbuds please!). These will remain in our classroom for the year. These will be placed in baggies and will be used only by your student.
Please be sure your child brings their library books to school every day!
Here are the class days for library:
- Monday - Blackburn
- Tuesday - Clary
- Wednesday - Smith
- Thursday - Park
On these days, please be sure your child packs any old books so they can get new ones. Please encourage your child to take care of these books. If your child loses it or damages it, please contact our librarian: rebecca.young@gcisd.net.
Paying for Meals
GCISD will begin charging for meals this year. To see if your child qualifies for Free or Reduced Meal Pricing, please click HERE and complete the form.
To add money to your child's meal account, please send a check to school with them or drop it by the front office. **Pro Tip** Download the My School Bucks App from your App Store. You can add money directly to your child's meal account, track their spending, and receive notifications when their meal account runs low!
Breakfast- $1.65
Breakfast will be served 7:20-7:35 each morning, and students needing to grab a breakfast before heading to their classrooms should arrive as close to 7:20 as possible each day! Breakfast will be eaten in the classroom. Please communicate with your child's teacher if you need them to get breakfast from the cafeteria.
Lunch- $2.80
When will my child eat lunch?
Lunch times vary by grade level, but each grade level will have 30 minutes in the cafeteria. 30 minutes will fly by! If sending a lunch from home, please practice with your child how to open the containers by themselves.
If buying a lunch from the cafeteria, students will go through the serving line and choose a milk, entree, and sides.

Healthy Snacks... Healthy Brain!
Please pack a healthy snack for your child's afternoon snack! Foods such as carrots, yogurt, apple sauce, fruits, pretzels, etc are encouraged!
Unhealthy foods such as chips, cookies, donuts, candy, etc. will not be allowed and we will ask your child to save it for home. If you have any questions, please email your child's teacher.
Dove Behavior Expectations
This year all of DOVE students will be using the CHAMPS system in their classrooms and common areas to set the expectation of behaviors expected. CHAMPS stands for Communication, Help, Movement, Participation, and Success. Before a different activity or going into a common area teachers and students will review the expectations for each of the letters "CHAMPS" so that all students can be successful!

This week your student will be talking with their peers about what these school-wide expectations look like. Please help reinforce these expectations at home.
Is your student going to be absent?
If your child is absent, please notify your child's teacher via email or call the school at (817) 251-5700.
It is required for Dove to keep track of absences and the reasons why. Thanks for your cooperation!
