News for the week of April 21, 2014
"Spring Training" for summer reading!
All students and teachers are urged to read as many pages as possible between April 7th and the week of May 12th-16th. Individual student page totals will be turned in to Ms. Knight, and the class--in each grade level--that reads the most pages will earn a special celebration in the library!

Book of the Week: Three Hens and a Peacock
Three Hens and a Peacock, written by Lester Laminack and illustrated by Henry Cole, was a nominee for the 13-14 South Carolina Picture Book Award.
This book has cute, cartoonish illustrations that will engage young readers. Readers of all ages will appreciate the message of working together and playing to one’s strengths that is emphasized in this book. After all, a male peacock cannot lay eggs, and hens aren’t likely to attract a lot of attention, but, working together, they can get people to stop driving long enough to enjoy some produce and fresh eggs on the farm!

The Jefferson Awards for Public Service is currently hosting a nationwide youth service initiative called Lead360 Challenge. Anyone under the age of 25 can go online to the Lead360 website and upload a description of their service work or project, which can be either individual or team-based service. The deadline to participate is Friday, April 25, at 11:59 PM. The three submissions that are selected as the most outstanding will be honored at the City Council meeting on May 12 with a reception immediately following, and later this summer they’ll be recognized during half time at a Greenville Drive game (and get free tickets!).
