What is Autism?

Autism is a severe developmental disorder that affects the way a child sees and interacts with the rest of the world
In 2012 the U.S. Federal Centers for Disease Control stated that 1 in 88 children in the U.S. were diagnosed.

Symptoms

-impairment to social interaction
-fixation on inanimate objects
-inability to communicate normally
-resistance to changes in everyday routine

Characteristic Traits

-lack of eye contact
-repetition of words or phrases
-unmotivated tantrums
-inability to express needs verbally
-insensitivity to pain

There is no concrete cause for Autism, but researchers do know it is not due to bad parenting

Treatments/Approaches to Autism

-Drug Therapy
-Auditory Training
-Music Therapy
-Holding Therapy
-Speech-language Therapy

Finances

In 2014, researchers estimated the lifetime cost of caring for a child with Autism is as great as $2.4 million. Not only is it expensive it usually has a negative effect on the child's family

Autistic children often have other disorders of brain function; 2/3 of kids with autism are mentally retarded; over 1/4 of kids with Autism develop seizures

School and Austim

Most kids with Autism have to take at least some form of special ed class.
