April is Poetry Month!

It's amazing to me how poetry follows us through our life's journey. First as an infant via lullabies, then our toddler years with nursery rhymes. As an elementary student, I loved when my teachers read poems from any of Shel Silverstein's books. My middle school teacher introduced me to Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. High school brought William Shakespeare, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allen Poe, and others. In college, I was introduced to Toni Morrison. I was mesmerized by the play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide...the Rainbow is Enuf." Later in life, I was moved by rupi kaur's gut-wrenching/heartbreaking words and flowing images.

Did you realize that most songs start out as poems? Did you realize that not all poems rhyme?

Come check out a book on poetry from the library or listen to an audio book of poetry on Sora so you can hear the cadence. Then, sit down and write a poem of your own! I'd love to read it!
