Dr. Rachel Williams, Principal
From the Principal
Dear Parents,
Today, I wanted to share something very personal with you that is completely unrelated to school, but worthy of our thoughts. I think back to 2007 when I was just named Teacher of the Year at my school in DeKalb. I had been a teacher there for many years and was so proud to have finally received this honor. Shortly thereafter, I received a call to the front office of my school stating my mother was on the phone. I know my family well, and they would never call my job unless it was an absolute emergency. I rushed to the phone to be told by my own mother that she was just diagnosed with breast cancer. Very quickly, the happiest moment in my life changed to be one of the saddest. I was in my late twenties and very inexperienced when it came to her diagnosis and prognosis for the future. What I did know, however, was my mom was a registered nurse who was well educated in medicine and she had a great group of friends from our church in the medical field. Within two days she underwent surgery at the age of 48 years old.
I share this with you because today, at the age of 60, my mother is healthy and living a great life. She is a survivor and we have many of these in our school community. Cancer, I would imagine, has touched every single one of us in some way. During the month of October, we want to recognize all of our survivors and let them know just how proud we are of them for the courage they display. I have a colleague who is currently helping his wife through a new diagnosis. I also have a friend who last year, was diagnosed at the age of 33. She just finished up her treatments and is doing quite well. I write all this to say, we never know when our life may be changed in an instant with illness. Our outlook is what gets us through. We are thankful for all the survivors within the CCES community. You are strong, you are brave, and we admire you!
Tonight is homecoming at Milton High School. We will have a group representing CCES in the parade prior to the game. It will be a night filled with fun, so plan to join us if your schedule permits.
Have a great weekend!
Milton Spirit Night
Thanks to all of our Colt families for coming out to Spirit Night on the front lawn of Milton High. I took several pies to the face, but all for a good cause. We were able to raise over $130 for hurricane relief. I hope to see you this evening at parade or football festivities.

Digital Citizenship at CCES
Crabapple Crossing Elementary School is in the process of becoming a Common Sense Media Certified School for the 2018-2019 school year!
Our students have been receiving lessons designed by Common Sense Media on Digital Citizenship. Students are learning to be good Digital Citizens and stay safe on the internet. Our goal is to give our CCES Colts the digital education needed to begin developing positive and responsible digital footprints. In addition to being a vital resource to educators in this digital age, Common Sense Media is also a great resource for parents to use as they guide their children through these formative years.

Technology Tip of the Week
ONLINE STUDENT READING ACCESS AT HOME!
by Ann Marie Carrier - KSU iTeach Technology Coach
Trying to find new ways to use your technology to support your student's learning at school? Students have an almost unlimited number of books to read online using MackinVia! Once students go to the FCS Launchpad from any internet device, have them choose the colorful MackinVia icon to access hundreds of books on multiple topics and reading levels! On the left, Click EBOOKS and use the ADVANCED SEARCH at the bottom to choose various topics of interest, change the reading level or search a particular genre currently being studied in class. Students can even save items to their favorites list to create their own digital library!
Taking a long trip? You can even use the Audiobook option to help your student listen along to some great novels and learning books to keep them entertained. Data suggests students that have strong reading skills are more successful as they move forward through middle school and advanced curriculum as they get older. The next time you are looking for a way to keep your kids engaged, skip the movie & think MackinVia!
