Weekly Cougar News
ConVal High School Happenings - September 23, 2022
Message from Principal McKillop
Good Afternoon, Cougar Nation!
Last Saturday, we hosted the first Homecoming dance in two years inside our gymnasium. We welcomed close to 400 students back to campus for the event. It was a wonderful evening and our students were amazing. In addition to dancing and singing, students could buy pizza, water, and treats. The junior and senior classes each made just over $3,000.
On Wednesday evening, we opened our doors and welcomed parents/guardians to the building for our Fall Open House. It was exciting to meet new families and greet those who were able to join us at school. If you were unable to attend, please remember that you can reach out directly to teachers via their respective school email address if you have any questions.
Please review the upcoming important dates section. As noted below, next week we will have a Naviance/Common App evening in the library and a college application overview for students and families in the Lucy Hurlin Theatre.
I'm off to participate as a partner in the Unified Soccer scrimmage on Campus field!
Have a wonderful weekend,

Mr. Bowman's Classroom
Students in Mr. Bowman’s World Religions class are creating their own “Seder plate” as a formative assessment of the Judaism unit. Students learned that the Seder meal is a celebratory meal during the Passover holiday. Each item on the Seder plate is symbolic of the history that made the Jews who they are. Mr. Bowman’s students, showing great respect and reverence for this tradition, created their own personal “Seder plates” that included historical items that “make them who they are”.
Mrs. Harris's Classroom
This week in Mrs. Harris's English 10 Honors class they are currently reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Students are analyzing quotes, characters, conflict, and themes. This unit will culminate in a literary analysis and a project on a current social justice issue.
NH Construction Career Days
On Friday, September 23 over 40 ConVal students participated in the NH Construction Career Days event at the Hillsborough County Youth Center in New Boston. Students got to experience driving some of the 30 pieces of active construction equipment, as well as interact with the 95+ exhibitors, including Associated Builders & Contractors of NH/VT, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers LU 490, Methuen Construction, and Palmer & Sicard. Students were able to participate in activities such as virtual welding, tree climbing demos, drone exercises, and photovoltaics and solar panel assembly and operation. The goal of the day was to allow students the opportunity to explore the many career paths associated with the construction trades.

Athletic and Co-Curricular Updates
NH Tackles Hunger: Today was our last day in our participation for NH Tackles Hunger for 2022. On behalf of the school community, we want to thank all the individuals and families who either donated and/or helped transport those donations. We want to thank all of our athletes, the National Honor Society, Student Council and government, and the Friends of ConVal Athletics (FCVA) for making this year’s event a success. Next week, we will have a final tally on how much the ConVal community donated. Please visit our website to get all of the information on sporting events happening over the next couple of weeks.
Homecoming: Last week, we held our first full homecoming experience in the past three years. The entire weekend was filled with excitement and positive energy. It all started with our Volleyball team playing an inspiring match vs. John Stark and then culminating with a homecoming dance in the ConVal gym. The positive energy and feeling of community our students have brought into this school year has set a great tone for 2022-2023.
Club Fair: Today we held our annual club fair during TASC. We have a lot of great opportunities for all students to get involved in the school community. If you would like more information on clubs and activities that our school offers, please visit our website or contact the athletics and co-curricular office during school hours.
Annime Club News!
This week’s featured ConVal Co-Curricular/Club is Anime Club.
Anime Club is a positive place that promotes students to share their love and knowledge of anime, as well as appreciate Japanese culture. Members participate in viewing, drawing, discussing and learning about anime-related topics. No previous knowledge about anime is required to join, everyone is welcome! The attendance policy is: “come when you can.”
According to advisor Rachel Berten, “The club is probably going to meet Thursdays after school, twice a month, but that could change depending on member availability. We plan to talk about Anime, watch anime, and possibly read manga. We have toyed with the idea of doing pen pals, trying different Japanese foods, learning to draw anime.”
“One day,” Berten concluded, “I would love to go to an animecon with the students, but that’s a long ways off.”
If you would like to join or get more information, please contact club advisor Rachel Berten at firstname.lastname@example.org.

We have selected three books to read this year - All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir (November), Born a Crime by Trevor Noah (February), and Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu (April). We will meet at PTL to discuss what we liked, didn't like, and everything in between. Also, good snacks are always provided.

ConVal Online School Store
Welcome the the FALL FCVA Store, part 2!
1. As you may be aware, there are still issues with the supply chain for apparel. At the time of the store opening, all items were available. This can change at the last moment - and we may have to change brands due to availability.
2. Once the store closes, we will order products and as soon as they arrive, we will begin embroidering & screen printing.
3. All purchases will be bagged and delivered to the high school for pickup (we will email you with that information).
Thanks again for supporting your school store!!
