Unit 1 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What are some of the challenges and triumphs of growing up?
This week we began analyzing our launch text “Wagon Train at Dusk” and
the memoir, written in verse(prose) by Jacquelin Woodson, “Brown Girl Dreaming.” We discussed elements of a memoir and practiced our writing skills in our journals. Focus for grammar was identifying “dead” words and replacing them with a better, more descriptive word, to help improve our word choice. Next week the focus will be common, proper, and possessive nouns, as well as analyzing a comic strip and the understanding and applying the knowledge of new vocabulary: encapsulation, panel, and speech balloons.

Esta semana comenzamos a analizar nuestro texto de lanzamiento “Wagon Train at Dusk” y
las memorias, escritas en verso (prosa) por Jacquelin Woodson, “Brown Girl Dreaming”. Discutimos los elementos de una memoria y practicamos nuestras habilidades de escritura en nuestros diarios. RAP with Mrs. Boyer
This week, we welcomed some new faces to our class. We reviewed our expectations and are ready to begin using our reading program, Achieve 3000. Next week, students will work on vocabulary and text analysis on an article about roller coasters and the thrill of fear. Students took their initial LevelSet to see where their Lexile level places them for reading, so now all the articles they read on Achieve 3000 will be at their own individualized reading level. It’s going to be a great year!
