Please Help Celebrate our Troops this Veteran's Day!
What are they doing all day?
While I am still learning about your child as a reader, I am finding many students need support with their sight words. Being able to quickly recognize and read first grade sight words is a high indicator of later reading success and allows your child to focus their energy on solving harder words. If your child brings home a word ring in their reading envelope, please help your child with these words. They should be able to read and write them quickly. A white board, magnetic letters, or a tray of sugar is all you need to help your child but if you are interested in more creative and fun ways to practice sight words see here: http://www.education.com/activity/sight-words/
WRITING
In Writer's Workshop we are writing small moment personal narratives. We have learned how to write a beginning, middle, and end, plan our writing, and revise our writing.. We've also introduced "spider legs" a tool we can use to help use edit our writing when we left out important details. Truly this is one of my favorite parts of the dayThe kiddos love being authors and the energy in the room is AWESOME!
MATH
We have been working on adding one and two more and subtracting one and two less. We have practicing vocabulary like more than, less than, greater than, smaller than, larger than, etc. We've practiced counting/adding/subtracting on a number line. We've also explored the Commutative Property of addition or "turn around" facts. This is one of the ways we learn our addition facts. If you know 3+4=7 then you also know 4+3=7.
We have also been hitting the Mathematical Practices with 3 Act Math tasks and problem solving. Each kiddo is at a different place in their understanding of the math practices but some of the things we have been working on are: making sense of problems and preserving in solving them, model with mathematics, choosing a tool and using the tool appropriately, and constructing viable arguments.
