Mrs. Liddon's First Grade

February 2, 2016

We are moving in a selective seating type classroom. Students will be able to choose where they would like to sit. The choices will include a low table, a standing table, a table with exercise balls for seats, and the traditional seating and tables for those that like routine.

I am also trying to get a Maker Space up and running in our room. This will be a space for children to explore and make what ever they choose. This type of exploration fosters self-directed learning and allows the students to hone in on their interests. More to come on this as the quarter progresses.

If you would like to contribute to our Maker Space, empty your junk drawers and send it in!

I have also added a clip-chart to our classroom. Students who are going above and beyond on their classwork and behavior will be able to "clip up". There are three levels and students will receive a special surprise when they get to the top. At the end of each day if they were able to clip up they can color their behavior chart to show it. Please ask your child about this and feel free to email me with questions.

Quarter Three

As we move into quarter three I would like to take a moment to say, "Thank You!" I am extremely pleased with the progress that your children have made this quarter. With my extended absence for surgery, and my absence for the technology conference, they have still grown leaps and bounds. I am very proud of them and I appreciate you taking the time to work with them daily.

This quarter I would like to try something new with communicating grades. Currently, I am assessing students daily through observation, online programs, and conversation, however, this is something parents don't always get to see. You get the mid-quarter and end of the quarter assessments, and that is not always an accurate picture of your child's progress.

Starting next Friday I will be sending home a half sheet that will give you a snap shot of how your child is doing with current skills. The format will be a "stars and stairs" approach. If they have mastered a skill or if they are close to mastery they will receive a star for that goal. If there is still a great deal of practice needed then they will receive a stair for that goal. I hope this will help you to feel more "in the loop" and see more of what I see throughout the quarter instead of just at the close of the quarter.

*If you don't mind having it emailed to you please let me know. My goal is use as little paper as possible :)

Valentine's Day!

Please be sure to send in a clean, empty milk jug for your child as soon as possible, I will need time to cut the tops off of them. Students will be decorating them to use for their Valentine's exchange in class.

If you would like to send in a treat for that day, or a drink please let me know.
