Points to Ponder for Parents
Having school friends contributes to a child’s positive feelings about school. To help your child make friends, show them the qualities that make it possible to attract and keep friends. Model the qualities of being kind to others, not gossiping, and being available when your friends need help. Also teach your child to:
- Be polite. Say, "Excuse me," "I’m sorry," "Please" and "Thank you."
- Listen to what others have to say.
- Be a good sport. It is important to look out for the welfare of the entire team.
- Be assertive. Stand up for what’s right, without being aggressive.
- Spend some time alone. Kids who enjoy their own company don’t always need to be the center of attention.
- Be friendly. Smile at classmates and say, "Hi."
Focusing on Strengths Calms Anxiety
Even the most capable children sometimes complain, "I don’t get this," or "I’ll never get this! I’m stupid!" If you let this go on, your child will think he can’t do well, so he won’t even try. Here’s how to get your child back on track:- Focus on his strengths. Don’t emphasize failures.
- Talk about how he’s improved—not about what he’s done wrong or forgot.
- Challenge negative talk. Remind him of past successes.
- Put setbacks into perspective. "Yes, you got a bad grade. But you gave it a good try. Let’s talk about things that you can do to improve."
- Avoid comparing him to siblings.
- Be a booster. Never say, "Stop complaining and get to work." Admit the work might be hard. But note he’s done hard work like this before and triumphed.
- Show your interest in what he’s learning. Ask to see his work.
- Listen attentively to what he says about schoolwork without judging or arguing. If you have a concern, be sure to share it with his teacher.
If you have five extra minutes during the day, you can use that time to help your child learn. Here’s what teachers recommend:
- Boost creativity. Ask your child questions that get her thinking. "What if the sun came up at night?" "What if we had eyes in the back of our head?"
- Ask your child’s opinion. Find out what her favorite subject, book or song is. Have her explain why.
- Be a storyteller. Don’t just tell fantasy tales. Fill your stories with information about the real world.
- Tell your child you love her. Children need to feel loved and accepted to take the risks necessary to learn.
- Review basic life skills: Have your child practice tying shoes or counting the change in your wallet.
- Explore the world together. Encourage your child to look, touch and ask questions.
- Ask your child to tell you what she finds interesting. Listen attentively to what she says.

First Grade
- Please be sure to listen to your child read their book bag to you EVERY night. Even if your child attends ACE, they still need to read to you. ACE does not listen to them read.
-
First graders need to practice counting up to 120. They need to practice counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. They also need to practice writing these numbers. (Call out random numbers from 1-120 for them to write)

Third Grade
- Parents may help their child at home learn their reading vocabulary words by downloading the app Quizlet. This is a fun way to practice learning the vocabulary words.
- Istation Home is ready to use and assignments have been assigned on skills covered in class. This is great at home practice. Parents will need to follow the instructions to install and then use the students username and password.
