Let's Move our Traditions toward Health.
Tradition (plural traditions): " A part of culture that is passed from person to person or generation to generation, possibly differing in detail from family to family, such as the way to celebrate holidays."
We work hard to uphold traditions in regards to how we eat, and because we're thankful for you, we're asking you to think about and maybe create a family tradition around movement for this holiday. This will take a variety of forms, depending on your age, mobility and location. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
Find a Turkey Trot Thanksgiving morning in your town. Remember, you don’t have to run, you can walk too.
Build in a family game of football, whiffle ball, or soccer into the feast day
Plan a walk around the block or a fun exercise routine the morning of the big meal, and look for relatives or friends who will support you in being active.
Take a hike at the local park, they are a wonderful resource and many of them have waived their fees for Black Friday.
The actual feast:
Spread out the work so no one gets stuck doing everything. If Grandma cooked the meal, give Grandma a break, help her out the door to relax on the porch while the family takes over to clean and do dishes.
Be conscious of the dishes you plan for the big day. Not everything has to have a ton of sugar and fat in it. If you’re going to cook from scratch- what if you spend a few extra minutes finding a healthier version to make?
Put a plate of veggies on the table before the meal. Unadorned veggies are filling, nutritious and have a way of tamping down the enormity of an appetite. Boost your meal with a salad prior to the foods that you want so badly- so you're likely to eat more of the foods that are good for you.
If you’re at someone else’s home for dinner, bring your own healthy dish to the table. If you know your weakness is desserts, find a recipe for a healthier one.
Most of all… Eat slowly, enjoy your food and Stop eating when you are full.
We hope that you have a wonderful holiday and we are truly grateful for you.
"Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some." Charles Dickens
