Gladiator News
Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School Newsletter
March 13-24, 2017
Current 6th and 7th-grade students received a copy of their course selections for the 17-18 school year. The courses are not in any particular order. Students have until June 2, 2017, to make any changes to their course selections. Students should see their counselor regarding any changes or questions about their schedule.
Students that have applied to attend a magnet school for the 17-18 school year should receive notification in the next few days. If they have been accepted, the student needs to inform our counseling office that they will be accepting the placement. If the student chooses not to attend a particular school, please inform the counseling office of that decision as well.
Good luck to our FLL Robotics teams! They have advanced and will compete on Sunday.
Have a safe and restful spring break!
It's a GREAT day to be a Gladiator!

Attention 6th Grade Parents
Immunizations Needed for 17-18 school year:
Your child will be required to show proof of the Tdap (within the last 5 years) and Meningococcal (MCV4 ) on or after their 11th birthday (Note: if student received it at age 10, this will satisfy the requirement) in order to start the 7th grade. Notices are being sent home this week for students who have not yet met this requirement. Please ask your child if they received a notice. If you are unsure about whether or not your child turned in the record or needs these immunizations, then please do not hesitate to contact Merry Garcia, School Nurse, at (210) 397-8409.

Self Image Video Created by HGMS Students
Nine HGMS eighth graders have been working on earning a Girl Scout Silver Award. The Silver Award is the highest award middle school Girl Scouts can earn and is both a service project and leadership development as the girls plan, lead and share their project. Each girl has committed at least 50 hours of community service for this project.
They began a year ago by choosing three issue areas they wanted to learn more about. They decided to focus on supporting the Eating Recovery Center of SA. Their project includes one team in the troop painting inspirational messages on stones and building a patio for the center’s therapeutic garden, another team is developing a video on self-image, and a third team planned an event for other pre-teens and teens to share info about positive self-image and eating disorders.
The girls in the troop are:
Alexandra Castillo
Amelia Blackmon
Casey Van Alstyne
Emma Garza
Gemma Di Giosia
Isabella Sotelo
Jennica Lopez
Leslie Goodman
Lilly Sanchez
Their video is included below.
