East China School District News
Every Child, Every Day!
Update from the Superintendent
As we begin the last week of school for a year like no other I want to express my gratitude to everyone; parents, teachers, principals, central office staff, secretaries, students, support staff, custodians and school PTOs, for each contribution and effort that was made to tackle the challenges that the end of this school year brought. We rose above it; we created learning opportunities for students, we supported each other and we created memories in new and unique ways. No one gave up or gave in. It just isn't the East China way. Not every day was perfect but perfection was not expected. Just the effort to make each day the best that it can be for our students and families.
Our teachers and principals found ways to connect and celebrate our students in a new virtual environment. Our high school teachers and principals have also worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to create memorable and celebratory graduation ceremonies within our current state guidelines for our very special 2020 graduates.
Starting on March 17, the week after school was closed and every week following, a team of volunteers and food service employees has provided meals to families with over 154,298 meals served so far.
I believe that during this extremely challenging time what was reaffirmed for all of us is how important our schools are to the heart of our community our students and families. School is so much to all of us; the daily greetings, the classes, the friends, the smiles, the care when needed, the loud and crazy fun of the cafeteria each day, the band concerts, field trips, the choir concerts, athletic events, drama productions, the end of year recognition ceremonies, celebrations and field days.
Over the summer weeks, the East China return to school team will be working to get us back to school and what we love. The tentative first day of school is September 8, 2020.
We will need to wait for the guidelines from the State of Michigan on the specifics on how we will be allowed to return to school. But in the mean time we will preparing, exploring and researching the options.
I will continue to send a weekly District newsletter with updates on the return to school with emails to parents as needed. We will also be able to begin providing Bond 2020 updates as the projects get underway.
Have a wonderful summer.
Suzanne
