ONLINE HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHT ~ Did you know that state testing participation rates are critical to the success of our school? According to recent changes promulgated by Every Student Succeeds Act (“ESSA”), signed into law in December 2015, a public school is required to achieve a participation rate of 95% on any state testing. If a school has less than 95% of its scholars participate in any assessment, the school runs the risk of receiving a serious penalty by the state of California or federal government. Compass administers all state standardized tests at sites geographically placed in our scholar’s communities. If your scholar has yet to sign up for testing, please reach out to your supervising teacher!
RE-ENROLLMENT ~ Our 2019-20 re-enrollment window is open! If you have not done so already, please be sure to complete the short form in ParentSquare, which asks if your scholar(s) will be returning to continue their educational journey with us next year (and we do hope you are!)!
SCHOLAR WORKSHOP ~ All of our scholars are invited to visit any Guitar Center, Inc. location for an open house next Saturday, April 20 from 1-4pm. Families will take a tour of the lessons facility, meet the instructors and the scholars will enjoy a free 10-minute lesson!
K-8 SCHOOL NEWS
MISS D.’S SUCCESS TIP OF THE WEEK ~ CAASPP Testing continues this week! If your scholar has already taken their tests, encourage them to take advantage of this time to get caught up on any missing assignments.
ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
AVID ~ This week we’re sharing four simple strategies to help scholars learn how to critically read complex texts:
Number the Paragraphs: This helps scholars cite and refer back to the text
Chunk the Text: Reading a page full of text may seem overwhelming. Breaking up the text into smaller sections (or chunks) makes the page much more manageable. Scholars can draw a horizontal line between paragraphs to divide the page into smaller sections.
Underline and Circle: Scholars should strive to underline and circle very specific, critical parts of the text. They can think about what information they need to take from the text like an important argument, claims, or imagery.
Use Left and Right Margins: What is the author saying? Scholars can use the left margin to summarize each chunk of the text using 10 words or less. Then, they can use the right margin to dig deeper and find power verbs to better understand what the author is doing or prepare questions to ask your teacher.
MRS. SMITH’S TIP OF THE WEEK ~ Each scholar has 24/7 access to their courses throughout the semester. This is an important feature and that allows scholars to work on their assignments during spring break. Scholars who may have fallen behind are strongly encouraged to work during school breaks to catch up and successfully complete their courses!

FEATURED ARTICLE ~ Process Writing is a way of breaking down the task of writing into its smaller parts. By completing each step sequentially, writing can become less in and less daunting task.
FEATURED WEBINAR ~ Engaging Career Paths for Teens and Young Adults with ADHD tomorrow, Tuesday, April 9 at 10a: If teens and young adults are honest about their strengths and aware of their weaknesses they can choose a job or career to maximize their chances of success. The real trick is remaining open to the idea that college is not the best path to success for many scholars, and exploring all alternatives. From there, it’s a matter of continuously building workplace skills after selecting a career, or strengthening executive functions after deciding to pursue college.
