CHS Update
5-3-2020
End of Week 2
As we end week 2 of our remote learning plan, I am honestly thrilled with the level of participation that our students have demonstrated and I know that much of that doesn't happen without the support of home. We have learned so much as a staff these past couple of weeks and appreciate all of the flexibility and patience that you and our students have extended. As we go into these last few weeks of school, I KNOW that we will continue to get better and better as a CHS community as we continue to engage and communicate with each other. As always, if you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know!
Be kind, be safe, and be well!

Grading, Participation, and More
- If students were failing a class when we left school in March, they need to connect with their teacher(s) and determine what they need to do to increase their grade to passing. This is extremely important!
- Students who engage with the activities/assignments given (regardless of how correct they are) AND who had a grade to earn credit (60% or higher) when they left will earn credit in the course.
- Having a grade put on a student's transcript is an option, it is NOT always the best option and it must be said that colleges/universities and pretty much the world knows that MANY schools will be exercising the credit/no credit option. They are making plans to allow for this.
- If a student takes credit in a course, there is zero impact on the GPA. The only thing that changes is the amount of credits toward graduation. If students take a grade in a course, their GPA is positively/negatively impacted. The amount of credits toward graduation also increases (assuming credit is given).
- Google meets with teachers are optional resources for support, but a great way to connect, ask questions, and sometimes complete an activity WITH a teacher.
- Creating a schedule for learning at home is the MOST important thing a student can do. I know (maybe from personal experience) that it is easy to fool yourself into thinking you will get it done at a certain time if it's only in your head.
- Teachers are contacting home for students who are not engaging with work or who are missing assignments. We are not trying to raise alarms, we are simply trying to determine the best path for a student and his/her family. Students who refuse to engage are putting themselves in jeopardy of losing credit.
- We absolutely have made accommodations for students who are dealing with covid-19 and circumstances related to this time, please let us know and we WILL work with you.
There are many other questions that are answered in our FAQ document that we update as we continue to develop more answers and sometimes more detailed answers to questions that arise. It can be found here.
Food Service Information
Food distribution will continue to take place from 1:00-3:00 in the Carlson/Shumate bus loop on Tuesdays and Fridays. This is to ensure we are maintaining safety and social distancing protocols from the state and federal government. This breakfast and lunch service is available to ALL Gibraltar students. If you are taking part, we would love to wave hi to you in our drive-thru pickup, but definitely want you to the stay in your car.
Additionally, we provided information at the last food distribution for families whose income has changed allowing them to access benefits including P-BET. More information is located in the PDF directly below.
Senior Info
We have also explored many options for graduation and are very close to setting a date to hold micro graduations. These are in-person ceremonies that honor between 40 and 50 students at a time and allow for immediate family members only to be in attendance. We will be finalizing the dates for this in this upcoming week, but are looking at the last week in July.
Finally, we are working on a way to complete senior honors and decision day ceremonies together. Please look for something to be released mid-May.
If you haven't checked it out, we are honoring the class of 2020 at the stadium every Friday night!
