The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - September 18, 2022
A Note from Ms. Welch
Thank you to all families who attended the Kindergarten or Grade 4 curriculum nights last week. This week, we have two more evenings. On Monday, we have Grade 1 and Grade 5. On Tuesday, we have Grade 2 and Grade 3. These events are intended for adults and teachers will be spending time presenting about curriculum, classroom routines and expectations, homework, etc. These are very important events to attend. If your child's curriculum night is this week, I hope you will attend.
Thank you to those parents who joined our first PTA meeting of the year last week. This year, PTA is back to holding monthly meetings. These will occur on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. The meetings are held both in person and via Zoom. We would love more families to attend and to be part of the PTA! Our PTA supports our school in extraordinary ways and is such an incredible partner in our work. To this, I ask that you please look below at the PTA section of the newsletter. There is a lot of information shared there for you to review. Some of this includes the current CL Spirt Wear that is on sale now, our upcoming Fun Run, Walk & Roll event, and we are advertising the PTA annual reflections opportunity for all students. Thank you PTA for all you do!
I hope you have a wonderful week ahead!
Take Care,
~ Jen Welch, Principal

•• New & Important Information ••
COVID update
The Department of Health (DOH) requires schools to inform families and students about COVID-19 case numbers and potential outbreaks. Over the past two weeks, there have been a total of 4 confirmed cases for people who work at some point at our school. The accuracy of our data depends on self-reporting. Thank you for continuing to let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19. To view additional information, including school and district trends visit the District’s COVID-19 data dashboard. The dashboard is updated weekly on Monday evenings.
If your child is exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 keep them home and test for COVID-19. Families can order free COVID-19 tests from the state. Together, we can keep our schools healthy and safe.

Volunteer Training
Welcoming volunteers into our school is an important part of our work to support our students. There are a few requirements our volunteers must follow.
- Yearly complete a new background check form
- All volunteers must complete a volunteer training with Ms. Welch, Principal
- All volunteers must be fully vaccinated.
If you have already attended a volunteer training with Ms. Welch, you do not need to attend another training. If you are new to Cottage Lake or you have not attended this training, we ask that you please attend the training before you volunteer at Cottage Lake. This training shares common information to all adults in our school and shares expectations as you work in classrooms or other supports around the school.
You do not need to register for the training. You can just show up. Below are the times we have scheduled volunteer training so far this school year. If there is not a time that works for you, please call the front office to find another time.

PTA Reflections
PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity. Students of all grades and abilities may participate by submitting original pieces of work in 6 categories (Dance, Musical Composition, Visual Arts, Film, Literature and Photography) against the theme of "Show Your Voice!"
Students will create their work of art AND write a short artist statement. Judging is based on both the artwork and artist statement.
Our PTA can send 20 Reflections art pieces plus 6 Special Artist submissions to Northshore Council PTSA in December. Those students' works of art will be celebrated at a districtwide showcase in January. Council will judge the pieces in each category and some pieces will continue onto State PTA and National PTA for further judging. Regardless of where a student places, our PTA will celebrate any student artist who submits a piece of art for Reflections.
For more information and student packets (rules and forms) go to http://www.northshorecouncilptsa.org/reflections.html (make sure you scroll down the page to see the student packet links in each category).
Pieces are due to Buffy Anson no later than November 18th by midnight.
For any questions, please contact Buffy at buffyanson@yahoo.com
