Dear Medford School District Families,
We know many of you have questions regarding Special Education, here is some information as it currently stands. If you would like to have a conversation with a specialist in our department, please feel free to reach out at 541-842-3628.
MSD Connects at Home: Special Education
Are we starting school in person or online?
On September 8, the Medford School District will start school with six weeks of Medford Connects at Home (Comprehensive Distance Learning) for all students K-12. For predictability and stability, we will run on a six week cycle with updates at three weeks. Our next assessment and update to the community will be on September 29. If Jackson County meets health metrics, we may begin MSD Connects at School (In-Person Instruction), in some form, on Oct. 19.
What about my student in special education?
During Medford Connects at Home, special education teachers will be teaching and holding groups just as they would in the building, but instead, online. For inclusion, students access their general education classes and content, but also receive the services they require through “push-in” from special education providers and office hours set aside specifically for your student. Our online curriculum also has the ability to differentiate and accommodate for students within their general education classroom environment.
Will students in special education return when we are in “yellow,” or meeting the metrics for the K-3 Exception outlined by the department of education?
When meeting the K-3 Exception, priority for in-person learning will be for students in kindergarten through third grade as well as students in our special education self-contained classrooms and our most high-risk students. Keep your eyes on our website for updates on COVID cases and which color we’re in.
What will a day of virtual learning look like for my student?
Students will still complete a full day of learning! At least 50% of learning will be teacher-led and the day will follow a schedule. The remainder of the time will be “applied learning” where students will apply their knowledge and skills via instructional activities. There will be virtual class lessons, two-way communication, daily attendance, and additional time to connect with teachers. Specific schedules will depend on grade level and course enrollment.
What if my child cannot attend to instruction the entire time?
Reach out to your student’s teachers and special education teacher. The team can meet to discuss individual student needs and create accommodations and modifications specific to your student, in order for them to interact with the learning environment the best way for them.
How will students on an IEP be accommodated?
Students on an IEP will receive accommodations and modifications as needed to access the instruction in the learning environment that best fits their needs academically, and taking health and safety into consideration. This may mean that the IEP team will need to meet to revise the IEP and recommend new accommodations. Making instruction accessible to ALL of our students is one of our biggest priorities at this time.
Will face coverings be mandatory for everyone who goes back to school?
We will be following ODE guidance on masks. ODE guidance states that face coverings are required for all students (K-12) as well as all staff, with some exceptions for medical necessities. Our district will be providing face coverings (reusable masks and face shields) for all students and staff. The Oregon Department of Education will be offering districts N-95 masks to distribute as well. If your child has extenuating circumstances requiring certain accommodations, the IEP team will look at options to allow your child to access their education as fully as possible.
My child has a medical condition and a physician's note that says they cannot wear a mask. Will they be able to come to school when in person instruction opens up?
Yes. We will work as a team to determine individual needs and accommodate so that no student is denied an education.
How will speech and language services be addressed?
Speech and language will be provided through teletherapy, as well consultation to parents for the small percentage of students that have difficulty engaging in speech and language through that platform. When in person instruction begins, speech and language will be offered in person to students who are not able to access teletherapy. At that time, face shields or clear masks will be used.
Will my child still receive specialized transportation as it is written on their IEP?
Yes. When we are able to bring your student on campus, specialized transportation will be provided if it is written on the IEP. The special education department is working closely with First Student to ensure ample time to set up bus routes for cohorting.
How will IEP meetings be held?
At this time, all IEP meetings will be held via Zoom. When in person instruction can occur, parents will be given the opportunity to attend in person while specialists and providers, other than the students building teachers, attend via Zoom. Annual IEP meetings will address services in all possible learning environments.
