Prinicpal's Point to Ponder

Resolution or Routine?

Guess what? It's a new year, and with it comes all the excitement that the newness brings. We can forget 2013 and begin anew in 2014. Of course, many of us are formulating our new year's resolutions. You know the usuals: eat right, loose weight, exercise more, read for pleasure, find your spirituality, keep your house clean, etc., etc., etc. Without fail, most of our resolutions are abandoned in about three weeks because changing our habits is a very hard thing to do. Making a New Year's resolution has almost become a cliche'. So this year, I challenge you to make a new year's routine instead of a resolution. A routine is something that you do almost without thinking because it has become second nature to you. Think about your morning routine, your bed time routine, your cleaning routine, and your packing routine. These are things you do in the same way each and every time that produces a desired result or outcome. There are many things I can think of in my personal life that, if a routine was developed, I would get a certain result. There are also things we could routinize in our work lives that would produce the desired result of student achievement. What are those things that need to become routine for you in order to get the desired result? I, for one, am looking forward to Monday and the new routines that I will begin in both my personal and work lives. I invite you to join me as we "realize the dream through routines in 2014!"

What's Happening This Week?

Kudos / General Reminders / Expectations

  • Kudos to Ms. Donnellan and Ms. E. Taylor for leading the Statesville Road Chorus. The performance on Dec. 19th was fabulous, full of energy, and festive!
  • Kudos to Mr. Lungarini for leading the vision for our school's first Holiday Assembly! The classes that participated did a fabulous job, the students were an attentive audience, and we look forward to other classes participating in the Black History Assembly coming in February! Thanks also to the teachers and staff who worked to prepare your classes for the performance. Jobs well done!!
  • Review and reestablish routines and procedures. Teachers: take the time on Monday morning and throughout the day to reorient our students to classroom and school wide routines and procedures. I am requiring that teachers eat with their classes in the cafeteria for this first week back. All staff, please be proactive and vocal in terms of school wide procedures. Give constructive correction when school wide and classroom procedures are not being followed. Give lots of praise when students are doing what is required.
