WHS Student Services
November 2017
WELCOME!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
During the months of October and November, members of the student services team have been hard at work supporting our students. On October 25th and 26th, social workers, psychologists, and counselors delivered the S.O.S., or “Signs of Suicide,” program to our sophomore students during their English classes. Additionally, counselors met with sophomores on November 1st for Future Planning Sessions, where students learned more about their career pathway, elective options, and course registration for the 2018-2019 school year. On November 3rd, counseling and social work interns ran their monthly Social Norms campaign during lunch periods.
Counselors hosted an enrollment night on October 24th for incoming freshman parents. Counselors have also been meeting with students individually to discuss course selection for the 2018-2019 school year, and students are encouraged to make an appointment with their counselor if they have any questions about course selection and registration. The Student Services office has served as a drop off point for Student Council’s annual food drive, which runs through November 17th. Counselors continue to run weekly AP student support group sessions during lunches on Wednesdays, and social workers and counselors also host a variety of other social-emotional groups to help support our students. Finally, Ms. Fastov, one of our social workers, has been hard at work planning Operation Snowball (see information below).
COURSE SELECTION
Course selection for the 2018-2019 school year is just around the corner. Some important points to keep in mind:
Students will be automatically moved into the next course sequence via Infinite Campus for core content classes (English, Math, Science). For example, a freshman student currently enrolled in Written and Oral Communications, will automatically roll into World Literature & Composition for their sophomore year.
Current freshman students will have their choice of social studies course for their sophomore year.
Content teachers will be able to make recommendations to counselors for students to move into higher level courses
Course offering sheets by grade level will be available soon.
Students will select their own electives via Infinite Campus. Elective choices SHOULD be aligned with the student’s career pathway
Videos promoting electives will air on the morning announcements prior to winter break
There will be an elective fair in the main hallway January 8-January 12
Counselors will visit all study halls January 10-January 12 and assist students in selecting their electives. If students do not have a study hall, counselors will meet with the student individually.
At any time, students and/or parents can schedule meetings with the school counselor by calling 847-718-7022.

CAREER ADVISING
Mary Czulno is the WHS career advisor, and she can work with students who have not decided on a career interest area. A career interest area is identifying one out of 16 possible clusters of positions that a student may aspire to. It's helpful to talk about early on in high school in case the student would like to take some academic classes that prepare them or look into one or more of our career and technical education courses.
The benefit of having an interest area is that our school and district may offer specific classes, career treks, and professional speakers in a given cluster. We advertise these opportunities to all students but we can do specific communication as well to students that have indicated an interest in the area. It's a huge benefit for students who are starting to understand what career may interest them. Students can talk to their counselor if they have an interest area that they would like reflected in their profile. If students don't know where to get started, they can contact Ms. Czulno to determine a pathway that is a good fit for them.
OPERATION SNOWBALL
This year, WHS Operation Snowball took place on November 11. The name originates from the idea that “If I have a positive impact on you, you can have a positive impact on someone else and the effect snowballs.” Out of this concept emerges “A Community of Caring” – the success of Operation Snowball.
